Mildenhall April 7 2001
National Bangers BBA Supreme Championship and 1300 Stockcars

The 2001 Supreme Championship was staged at Mildenhall on April 7 with 73 cars in total, just 22 of the 36 qualifiers for the championship on hand, all having qualified through last years Championship races. There were 24 visitors hailing from Spedeworth, Incarace, Trackstar, Northampton, Autospeed, PRI & GMP plus a further seven up from Dover. Car wise with V6 engines allowed in Granadas for one night only, there was little bilge with a Capri, two Sierras, Reno 21 & a brave soul in a used Lada. Only three had Cortinas, while four opted for Volvos. 23 Dave Stafford returned his Carlton, Motley Krew skipper 384 John Golden had a smart Mk1 Granny but defending champion 88 Speedy Reed stole the show with a superbly turned out Granada Hearse.

Just 15 cars for a very tame Novice qualifier, the only action from race winner 60 Mark Boden(Est) who planted 118 Nigel Overton(Volvo Est) into the wall.

A more impressive 32 cars came out for heat two which was better. Incarace's 39 Steve McEvoy set the ball rolling by burying 19 Joe Mullarkey into 777 Phillip Johnson which jacked the latter's Lada nicely before Trackstar's 183 Mark Gibbons stuffed Autospeed visit 734 Kevin Hooper. 39 Smosha then struck again running in 159 Darren Scarrow which finished his Volvo Estate as 383 Andrew Chisholm(Est) buried fellow Spedeworth man 537 Martin Brunson. 346 Scott Saunders(Volvo Est) landed a hit on 65 Jamie Charles which opened the door for 383 Chiz to steam 346 Muttley. Meanwhile 119 Davey Cox continued to feud with 715 Joe Murkin(Est) belting him as 279 Colin Coker(Est) weighed in on 6 Steve Humphreys. After the both circulated against the flow, 119 Cruncher homed in for a big hit on Murkin on the pits bend as 136 Mark Simpson took the flag after a battle with Charles & 211 Barry Franklin(Est) who finished 2nd & 3rd. 007 Ian Laws finished the race by burying Cruncher into the parked up 500 Wayne Doland. Chiz claimed 4th for Spedeworth.

The Supreme championship was next with 22 starters. Smart car trophies went to Speedy, 22 Dave Vincent, European champion 199 Phil Powell(Cortina), World champ 382 Danny Hunt, 206 Dave King & 384 Goldie. Pole starter 724 Mark Puddiphat blasted into the early lead as 206 Kingy ran in Goldie before Speedy took up the running as 158 Shane Davies continued his feud with 617 Jack Overy by meeting him in a big head-on only to cop one from Scotland's 502 Hoagy Wallace. 7 Colin Farely(Est) past 348 Sonny Sherwood for second with RDC's Vincent & 147 Andy Davies in chase but no-one could catch the flying Hearse of Speedy who motored to his second Supreme title with Vincent taking second, Mr Mess third & 7 Wally recovering for fourth after spinning on the last lap. The rest of the top ten was Puddiphat, 666 Mark Holdsworth, Hunt, 41 Willie Skoyles(Est), 9 Daren Wolf & 536 Annette Nicholls. Skoyles closed the event by going against the flow to give 348 Mush a big T-bone.

The consolation raised 24 starters with Davies again getting stuck in with a revenge head-on to Hoagy as 364 Sean Winchester went in on 487 Dave Silley, who also took stick from Hooper & 766 Barry Lee. Mullarkey then met Davies in a head-on but Davies fired back to meet Overy in a big head on by the pit gate with Winchester steaming Overy as did Mullarkey on 691 Barry Wenhold. This allowed 537 Bruno to do Mullarkey while 115 Gary Rose took the spoils, Powell second & PRI's 466 Lee Hackett 5th.

Just 19 of the 32 qualifiers came out for the final with Franklin treating Overton to a T-bone early on before 125 Lee Overy gave 136 Simmo one of the same. Simmo bounced back to hit the spun Wally on the nose as Vincent drove to the flag, Chiz stuffing 79 Adrian Clifton on the run down lap Wally & Chiz placed in 7th & 8th for Spedeworth.

The concluding Accumulator raised 14 starters but they put on the best show of the night. Silley started by burying Hackett only to cop one from Overton who was blasted by Clifton. Franklin meanwhile homed in on Silley for a head-on as did Winchester on Overton as the luckless Silley was T-boned by 223 Simon Royal(Volvo) as did Clifton on Overton. Royal then targeted Winchester who fired back to give Mullarkey a head-on. Royal continued his wrecking ways with a hit on 161 Darren Bowers(Volvo Est) only to cop a T-bone from Wenhold as Chiz buried Clifton into the turn four pile which had formed. Muttley scored with a T-bone on Wenhold as Franklin belted Clifton only for Royal to give him a head-on. This opened the door for both Chiz & Muttley to pound Royal as Mullarkey met Overton head-on, Chiz giving the latter a T-bone to add to his woes. The lively Franklin & Silley enjoyed a head-on as Winchester rammed Wenhold only to take one from his running mate, Hackett. Muttley & Royal met on the nose in a battle of the Volvo's with Mullarley going in on the Management star only to take punishment from Winchester & Franklin. The leading Vincent took a moment to T-bone Royal as Franklin assaulted Muttley but took a hit from Hackett as Chiz & Winchester went nose to nose. Chiz continued to blast Wenhold as did Winchester on Mullarkey before the crash happy Chiz & Franklin went head to head. Winchester briefly stopped the lapping Vincent but Vincent went on for his second win of the night as Winchester T-boned Wenhold allowing Vincent to get in a revenge hit. The action continued to allow Vincent to pound Wenhold as Winchester & Royal enjoyed a head-on. Further head-ons from Vincent & Royal & a steam from Vincent paid to Winchester while Royal also bit the dust while Wenhold fired up allowing Vincent to seal the deal with a big hit on Wenhold leaving him the last runner.

The second meeting for the PRI 1300cc Stockcars at RDC raised 16 cars including four on their maiden outing at the track.

A lively opening heat saw 700 Dave Armstrong led them away before fellow Kent racer 691 Mick Burke took up the running. He was succeeded by 718 Darren Cardy. However 748 John McGirr was again in flying mode & with five laps to go he reeled in Cardy & took the lead. However things go interesting with just a couple of laps to go he was wiped out by 657 Georgie Boult & 643 Derry Monk. This handed back Cardy the lead, but on the last lap he also crashed out. McGirr regained control but again it wasn't to be as Burke spun him on the last bend & a recovered 668 Paul Haralambou sneaked through for the win with Cardy second & the unlucky McGirr struggling home in 5th.

Armstrong again led the field as the second heat started, but only for a lap before Cardy blasted by & he romped to the flag. McGirr was the runner up struggling to pass several back markers which allowed Cardy the free run to the flag.

There was disaster though for Cardy in the final as following a false start he failed to see the green flag & instead Haralmbou had the clear run to motor to a faultless flag to flag victory. McGirr had worked his way to second but a battle with 639 Ricky Hunn in the closing laps saw both drivers loose a lot of time & Boult was able to slip through for second with McGirr recovering for third.
