Mildenhall July 6 2002
Unlimited Bangers and BriSCA F2 Stockcars White and Yellow Grade Final

A slightly disappointing entry of 57 Bangers arrived for RDC's annual Unlimited cc bash at Mildenhall on July 6 with a noticeable lack of visiting drivers with those who did come mainly hailing from Trackstar although there were a couple of PRI and Spedeworth plus Barford's 185 Shaun Barnes (Est). However some top machinery on show with seven large Volvos for starters, eight XJ's including XJ-40s for 159 Darren Scarrow and 537 Martin Brunson and continuing the Jaguar theme a pair of XJ-S' for 19 Joe Mullarkey and 39 Steve Moore, the former's very smart. Top Granada was the used Mk3 Hearse of 88 Speedy Reed while 89 Mick South had a Mercedes 250 and Looney Tune team mate 56 Phil Coe impressed with a Humber Hawk. Continuing the vintage theme was a pair of ultra smart FX4 Taxi's for 788 Darren Gathercole and 211 Barry Franklin and a Westminster for 814 Mark Millen. 173 Nick Gant returned his P4 Rover from last year and there was a trio of Rover P5's with 924 Matt Millen in a used example while 85 James Ellis producing a Coupe and 22 Dave Vincent an immaculately presented P5B leaving just three Yanks, two sadly going unpainted which were a Caddy Seville for 619 Karl Turnball and a Mustang for 700 Carl Causby plus a Ford Fairmont Estate for 503 Daniel Hollinsworth.

28 cars for the opener which started with 247 Martin Butts getting stuffed by 801 Anthony Clarke, the latter getting clobbered by 619 Rhino's Yank as South treated 503 Tin-Tin to a T-bone. Vincent met 388 Emmerson Fairweather's Volvo on the nose as 487 Dave Silley (Carlton) took a T-bone from 118 Nigel Overton (Est) who continued to dish out similar stick to 298 Dave Bessant's XJ. Matt Millen used the Rover to hammer both Tin Tin and 388 Emmo, the latter hit taking them both onto the centre as 39 Peanut buried 247 Butty on the back straight setting the latter up for an epic T-bone from the smart XJ of PRI's 328 Paul Wiles. 265 Troy Thiele had a go at Tin-Tin but he rallied back to land a head-on to 119 Davey Cox as Rhino belted 21 Jason Colbert. Matt Millen dished out more stick, this time Wilkes and 119 Cruncher concluded the event as he also attacked 328. 249 Matt Frost (Est) took the flag followed by 53 Dave Palmer and Thiele with just seven finishing, all RDC.

Same amount for heat two which was an improvement starting with Mr Crash Happy 537 Bruno blasting 642 Guy Barber's Volvo only to get buried hard by 17 Ray Sharrod (XJ) as 644 Chris Jones landed a hit on the XJ of 154 Stephen Heyward and Sharrod continued his lively ways with a hit to Barber as 617 Jack Overy hammered 742 Ross Stebbings (Volvo) only to take one from 788 Darren G. 23 Dave Stafford used his smart Granada Estate to take in Scarrow and the Mustang as 364 Sean Winchester opened his account by burying Mullarkey and 148 Ian Redden. Causby then came under fire from Gant's Aunty before 211 Bazza treated Mullarkey to a T-bone. Then at the end of the home straight Darren G's Cab was decimated by a monster hit from 35 Peter Lewis (Volvo Est), the damage made worse when Ellis piled up the back of Lewis. Winchester then followed in Stebbings before he buried 221 Michael Whitelock on the next bend. Mullarkey then crashed into both Bazza and Bruno before 312 Tom Reynolds (Volvo Est) scored with a T-bone on Gant. Scarrow treated Jones to a hard pit bend follow in as 148 Shorty beautifully spun Speedy to take his third win in seven day followed home by 214 Marcus Ballard and a recovered Speedy, nine finishing this time around.

Down to 21 starters for the consolation with a Volvo on Volvo altercation to start as 324 Mark Latham buried 725 TJ Roberts as Mark Millen homed the Westy up the back of Spedeworth young gun 533 Justin Garmond. Latham got a taste of his own medicine from Mullarkey, who continued the assault by firing him into the Armco on the pits bend half a lap later. Matt Millen followed his brother's lead with a hit on 533 Garmo only to take a revenge hit from Emmo as 404 Stephen Sarrl and Roberts tangled and went in very hard at the end of the home straight. Mullarkey weighed in on the latter but took a shot himself from 665 Stu Scarlett. 917 John Millen neatly spun Overy for the lead but then he ran sick and Overy recovered and held off Vincent's rapid P5 for the win, 411 Gareth Roberts ending the action with a hit on Latham with just eight finishing.

Almost all the qualifiers made it out for the final but there were still only 24 cars out there with a spun Ellis given a head-on from Peanut right at the start, Tin Tin looking for 85 but catching him in the door as 249 Frosty stuffed Mullarkey into Peanut and Vincent was walled by Sharrod. Tin Tin assaulted Mullarkey with a series of blows and Peanut and Ellis continued to exchange head-ons. 297 Martin Tappenden (XJ) met Rhino's Caddy on the nose as 312 Turbo homed up the back on Sharrod and Cruncher did the same with Tappenden. Turbo blasted Rhino as Shorty put away Thiele and Ellis took a hard T-bone from Ellis as 326 Jay Ruddock fell foul of Tin Tin and Winchester blasted Frosty only to take one in turn from Turbo as the reds came out for a shaken Ellis. Scarrow started the restart with a hit on Bessant and Turbo zeroed in on Cruncher for a monster head-on which also resulting in taking Speedy into the wall where Winchester gave the Hearse a shot. Winchester continued for a stiff T-bone on Peanut as Cruncher returned the favour on Turbo. Winhester was the man to watch as he now pummelled Mullarkey as Colbert attacked Ruddock. Cruncher did a lap before giving Turbo another head-on, before Mullarkey picked up Peanut and buried him hard into the Hitman Volvo snapping 39 a treat, Winchester then blitzing Mullarkey. Frosty was put away by 214 Mr Ballard where the former took a killer hit from 920 James Medley as Winchester ended things by putting away Colbert, Scarrow won from Colbert and Mr Ballard with only six finishing.

DD to conclude with 23 starters and it started with Scarrow putting in Winchester as Matt Millen T-boned Bazza's Cab. Overton blasted Mullarkey as Matt Millen and Turbo enjoyed a head-on with Wilkes doing the latter as did Scarlett while Winchester destroyed Overton. Tin Tin landed a hit on Wilkes while Scarrow sorted Scarlett and Matt Millen rammed Tin Tin. Bessant met Wilkes head-on for an XJ v XJ encounter while Gant rolled the P4 onto its side on the home straight. Overy then put away Emmo as Rhino blasted Scarrow. Winchester again set about Mullarkey's broken XJ-S as Sharrod and Coe met on the nose, Scarrow also attacking the Hawk only to be done by Overy which slowed him up for Winchester to do the World Champion with Scarrow continuing for a hit on Sharrod, Matt Millen also pounding the Trackstar man before turning his attentions to Scarrow for a head-on with Winchester blasting 159. Sharrod then did 364 as Matt Millen assaulted Coe and then followed in Sharrod who was finished by Coe. Winchester put down Scarrow with a blitz as Matt Millen polished off Coe with a couple of blows and ended the night with a head-on to Winchester which only the Rover backed off from, Winchester taking the best wrecker award.

Another strong entry of BriSCA F2 Stockcars for their sixth appearance of the year at Mildenhall with 47 cars in action including 28 of the 31 qualifiers for the first ever White and Yellow Grade series final at the venue which was race number one.

Spare a thought though for row two starter 713 Martin Ford who broke down on route to the track and missed the Novice race. So 27 qualifiers set off with the top scorer in the series 145 Graham Mole starting on pole. 597 Barry Clou and 284 Jody Griffin were early casualties as they hit the wall with 490 Anthony Dakin also getting collected as Mole made the early break with fellow front row starter 377 Darren Shaw on his tail while 504 Matt Everard spun 81 Mark Clayton, who spun again as soon as he recovered. 274 Trevor Bonnett then dug out 211 Steve Armstrong as Mole still led from Shaw and 515 Alan Veall until disaster struck for Shaw who tangled with 345 Gary Taylor taking him out while a luckless Clayton was taken out again, this time by Dakin. As Shaw tried to get going again his hopes were dashed completely by 291 Craig Tomlinson who spun him as 366 Mick Kemp was taken out by 193 Adrian Smith, which also claimed Taylor. Veall was reeling in Mole with 379 Stuart Cayzer not too far behind in third while 347 Mark Froggat got the better of 60 Ben Majoran in the fight for fourth. 431 Andy Gibbs hooked out Everard as Veal tried the last bend hit on Mole but he held it brilliantly and took the flag from Veall, Cayzer and Frogatt.

18 cars for the second heat with 798 Mark Sargent taking the early running as 48 Garry Fox, 177 Alan Skayman, 219 Chris Mitchell and 71 Nic Hoyes all spun. Sargent developed trouble and 848 Martin Elston took the running before loosing it to 43 Graham Smith as a luckless 702 Allan Cooper spun twice, his example followed by Fox, 290 James Waterfall and 519 Stephen Lawrence. A spinning Elston was then clobbered hard by Mitchell as Smith romped to the win from Skayman and 905 Rob Mitchell.

The consolation saw the biggest grid of the evening with 30 cars on the track and Shaw again in the firing line at the start as Adrian Smith spun him while Dakin set the pace and on the back straight Sargent crashed out hard with Hoyes. 833 Rob Kaye and Elston was also spinners as we lost Clou, 252 Rick Irving, Waterfall and Bonnet to the Armco. Lawrencetook the lead from Dakin who then got hooked on Bonnet spelling his demise as spinning Elston was hit by Ford. In the closing laps Clayton got the better of Lawrence, who tragically failed to finish, Clayton taking the flag from 13 Andy Ford and Irving.

Just one of the 26 qualifiers was absent for the final with Veall and 162 Stephen Featherstone early spinners as Taylor led from Cayzer who soon took it up with Frogatt going second as Graham Smith spun also. Armstrong then spun 744 Tom Smart which also claimed Majoran who was collected by Graham Smith bringing out the reds at just before the half way mark. On the restart second placed Frogatt went for the big hit on Cayzer but they hooked up and instead 977 Dave Massey blasted through for the lead but it lasted less than a lap as Mole spun him next time around to take it up with 885 Dave Tomlinson chasing before he ran sick and retired. It was now left to Kaye to do the chasing and with five to go he got there and took it up and motored to the win, Mole completing a great night by holding of Rob Mitchell for second. Disaster at the end also for Cayzer who held fourth only the passing charge of Andy Ford and Fox put him in the wall ending his race, Ford besting Fox in the fight for fourth.

Shaw hooked out 766 Richy Kemp at the start of the 23 car Grand National. 734 Carl Annison picked up a lead he was not to loose as Clou spun Armstrong and a pile up claimed Hoyes and Andy Ford plus others. Clayton and Lawrence had a great fight from second, Clayon eventually getting the runners up spot but there was no catching Annison who took the spoils.
