and 1400cc Bangers

Page updated August 25: In our final update before the BriSCA F2 Stockcar World of Shale Championship we add a driver preview of 597 Barry Clow. While we have not been able to contact Barry ourselves to confirm if he will be the 32nd entry in this years race we have it on good authority that he will be with us this weekend and as he has not missed a Mildenhall F2 meeting since May 2008 we feel its a pretty reasonable bet that he will be in action in the biggest race on shale this season for the formula.

MEETING INTRODUCTION

We are now counting down the days and weeks to the biggest night of the year for BriSCA F2 Stockcars at Mildenhall Stadium as on Saturday, August 28 the open wheeled sensations return to the West Row shaleway  to do battle for the World of Shale Championship.

With the race regarded by many to be the World Final for racers who concentrate largely on racing on shale, the event is certainly one of the highlights of the year in the formula and with this year's meeting for the open wheeled stockcar final being some of the best we have ever seen at the Suffolk stadium there are high hopes for their big night at Mildenhall in 2010.

With that in mind RDC plan to give the meeting the attention it deserves and a lot of that work will come from this section of the website which has been designed to give the race and RDC's Gold Rush event as a whole maximum promotion and hopefully all the information you will want to know about the big night can be found below.

And it's not just about the Stockcars as the banger brigade also play a large role in the evenings action  as the hugely popular 1400cc bangers return for their final Mildenhall outing of the season to settle the 2010 small car series.

Please use the quick find index links to go straight to the details you want or simply scroll down the whole page to read everything about this great night.

Many thanks to David Hamar for all his help and assistance with the information on this page.

Fascinating Facts

Introduction

The BriSCA F2 Stockcar World of Shale will be held for the 16th time as the headline event of RDC's Goldrush on August 28 at Mildenhall and if the previous meetings for the open wheeled formula at the Suffolk Shaleway are anything to go by then we are in for another feast of open wheeled stockcar action here as the leading names in the sport on shale do battle for one of its biggest prizes.

Not only have the Mildenhall meetings thus far in 2010 served up some tremendous action and entertainment but they have also been superbly supported by the drivers, the recent One Wild Weekend producing the biggest shale turnouts seen thus far this season and two of the biggest entries for a non championship meeting in the sport in 2010 which is a fantastic effort and we hope this trend will continue here.

Furthermore the racing at Mildenhall has never been so competitive in the formula. Of the 32 races held so far in 2010 for the formula an incredible 21 different drivers have enjoyed a race win meaning just 11 drivers have managed to take the chequered flag on more than one occasions this season and of them only defending World of Shale Champion 606 Andy Palmer and 871 Mark Simpson are the only drivers to have managed three race wins at West Row in 2010.

Even more impressive is that so far the six grand finals have all produced different race winners which underlines just how wide open this years championship race is.

Topping the qualifying chart in 2010 is the aforementioned Palmer and the track champion is looking to break new records this year by winning his fourth consecutive World of Shale title. But victory will be far from easy as the front rows are a star studded affair potentially featuring former World of Shale Champion 702 Allan Cooper, former World Champion 401 Barry Goldin, reigning British and European champion 38 Dave Polley and the aforementioned Simpson.

Beyond that the potential starting grid reads like a who's who of the F2 scene on shale and it includes 16 of the 21 race winners at Mildenhall so far in 2010 so picking a race winner is nigh on impossible as everyone starts the race as a contender.

As is usually the case with RDC, this meeting will be open to all BriSCA F2 Stockcar drivers and although we welcome drivers to book in, this is not a necessity as all drivers will be welcome to race on the night. However we would ask all World of Shale qualifiers to let us know if they intend to compete or not by calling RDC on 01268 412299 or 07850 683953 or e mailing wastedmc@btopenworld.com

It is also worth noting that this is the final meeting which carries qualifying points for the white and yellow grade series final ahead of the title race at Mildenhall on October 2.

World of Shale Preview

19 Martin Ford
World of Shale Points Position: 16th (51pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 7
World of Shale Debut: 2001
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn March 27 (29pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 70th (0pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 3 (1 final)

It’s a welcome return to the World of Shale grid for Martin Ford having missed the big race last season, the first time he has done so since his debut in 2001. However this race has yet to be kind to him and he is still without a top 10 finish to show for his efforts. Adding to his woes is his sole Mildenhall visit of the season failed to bring any points with it which suggests he faces an uphill struggle here from his mid-order starting position. However being a determined racer that is unlikely to bother him in the slightest and he will give it his all here and should he get the breaks then there is no reason why a maiden WoS top 10 will finally come his way.

38 Dave Polley
World of Shale Points Position: 4th (103pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 1
World of Shale Debut: 2004
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn May 29 (33pts)
Track Championship Position: N/A
2010 Mildenhall race wins: N/A
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 39 (13 finals)

We’ve yet to see the 2008 Mildenhall track champion at West Row in 2010 but it’s hardly been a dull time for this racer who is surely well on his way towards becoming one of the sports all time greats. Achieved the near impossible last season by not only taking the National Points title but also competed at 100 meetings which is nothing short of incredible and despite cutting back in 2010 he has already claimed the British and European Championship. His travels have secured him a fine fourth place finish in the World of Shale qualifying chart, even more impressive given he has yet to race at Mildenhall this season. Hopefully such a lofty grid position will be enough to entice this second generation racer to the site of his debut and so far only WoS appearance. However he’ll be hoping for better fortune than in 2004 where he failed to feature in the top 10. One of the many star names on this year’s grid and likely to play a big part in the opening laps.

52 Pete Robertson
World of Shale Points Position: 17th (47pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall July 25 (32pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 12th (52pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 2 (July 24 Consolation and July 25 Final)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (1 final)

The first of the World of Shale Championship rookies on our preview, Pete has proved to be a most useful addition to the shale scene in 2010 and at Mildenhall as well competing at all but the first track championship round. Finally found his stride at West Row at the July weekend with a maiden win in the consolation on the Saturday but better things followed with victory in the final the following day, these his only race wins in 2010 to date. Furthermore despite being 17th in the WoS rankings he is the first qualifier to have had his best round at Mildenhall with the aforementioned July 25 performance going a long way towards his appearance here. Likely to simply be pleased to be a part of this race and will seek to gain plenty of experience along the way. His primary goal is likely to be to finish but don’t count against a top 10.

70 Brian Shadbolt
World of Shale Points Position: 21st (43pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 3rd (1999)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 15
World of Shale Debut: 1995
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn March 27 and Coventry June 5 (13pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 42nd (9pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 0

It is a quite incredible achievement that in 2010 Brian Shadbolt will once again maintain his fantastic record of a 100 per cent attendance in each and every World of Shale Championship held since the maiden event back in 1995. This streak stays alive this season despite Brian cutting back a little due to work commitments meaning we didn’t see at Mildenhall this year until the last meeting where he picked up a few useful points to improve his grid position. Potentially starts too far back to stand a good chance of bettering his third place finish from 1999 but another drivers whose presence just behind the half way mark of the grid is likely to inject another pinch of excitement into the race. Certain to move forward from his starting place, it will interesting to chart his progress and see just how far up the grid he can go.

150 Mark Thoms
World of Shale Points Position: 18th (44pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall May 22 (35pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 7th (69pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 2 (May 1 consolation and May 22 final)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (1 final)

One of the season’s success stories has been the triumphant return of Mark Thoms whose debut season at Mildenhall has brought much joy, including his only race wins of 2010 to date and a first ever final win on a night which went a long way towards his World of Shale Championship debut. A very experienced racer who has very quickly got to grips with the Suffolk shaleway which make him a decent outside bet for this year’s race and one of the few drivers from the second half of the grid capable of challenging for the top six. Nonetheless he has much to be proud off this season, including qualifying for this race for the first time and will enjoy the occasion regardless of the outcome, anything more will be a wonderful bonus.

186 George Turiccki
World of Shale Points Position: 7th (71pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 7th (2009)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 1
World of Shale Debut: 2009
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Coventry June 5 and Belle Vue June 27 (17pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 8th (67pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (April 10, final)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 9 (3 finals)

This is set to be young gun Turiccki’s second big race of the month at Mildenhall but this couldn’t be any more different than the Reliant Robin World Final which he does very much with fun in mind. While he will no doubt enjoy his second World of Shale Final outing here there will be a serious edge to his night as he starts the race, very much a threat to the winner’s trophy. Sent a clear message to his rivals at the season opener at Mildenhall with a fine drive to win the final and end the night as the early track championship leader and his current position is most impressive given he has only competed at four of the six Mildenhall meetings to date. Impressed on his WoS debut last year with a very decent seventh and will no doubt be looking to improve on that in 2010 which he is more than capable with. Another likely to play a starring role in the first couple of bend where at the back of the star studded opening rows it could be argued he’ll have nothing to lose from sticking the bumper in.

259 Simon Farrington
World of Shale Points Position: 19th (43pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 1
World of Shale Debut: 2009
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Coventry June 5 (30pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 15th (47pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (May 22 heat one)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 3 (1 final)

One of the more consistent performers at Mildenhall in recent memory, Simon never seems to get quite as much luck as he would like and has often seen potential race wins slip from his grasp. The one exception this year was a heat win at May’s World of Shale qualifier which coupled with a dynamite performance at Coventry the following month has secured a successful return to the starting grid in 2010 following his debut last year. Failed to make the top 10 last season and surely that will be his goal this year although it’s going to be a tough fight from around two thirds of the way down the grid. More than quick enough to make progress should things go his way, hopefully he’ll get some well overdue luck and get the result he deserves.

291 Craig Tomblin
World of Shale Points Position: 28th (27pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 2
World of Shale Debut: 2002
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Coventry June 5 (11pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 26th (23pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (no finals)

Another of the formulas most determined drivers, Craig successfully made it back to the World of Shale grid last year after his debut and only other appearance back in 2002 at Mildenhall. However he is still yet to register a top 10 finish in this event and that will no doubt be his goal in 2010 although from 28th on the grid it will be no easy challenge. Certainly has the speed to achieve it but might have to regulate his aggression which, while entertaining, can sometimes be his downfall. Started the year at Mildenhall very well with a healthy 23 point haul but has since failed to score a single point which will be a point of concern. His grid position means he has nothing to lose this time and he could be another entertaining character to watch at the start.

369 Ben Atkinson
World of Shale Points Position: 14th (56pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn March 27 (20pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 24th (27pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (April 10 heat one)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 3 (no finals)

The winner of this year’s white grade award, Ben Atkinson has certainly been one of the breakout stars of the season in the sport and made plenty sit up and taken notice when he won the first race of the season at Mildenhall in April. Quickly shot up the grades to red but has since found the going somewhat tougher with a six point haul on May 22 being his best Mildenhall effort since the first meeting of 2010 here. It could be argued that starting 14th is a better position than his recent starting positions but with so many big guns in front of him he may struggle to break the top six without a crash or three. Nonetheless as the second highest debutant this year he has plenty to be proud off and even a modest top 10 finish would cap off an excellent World of Shale campaign for this star of the future.

377 Daz Shaw
World of Shale Points Position: 11th (64pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 5th (2003 and 2005)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 8
World of Shale Debut: 2002
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn May 29 (16pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 20th (32pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (1 final)

Work commitments mean we have seen far less of 2007 track champion Daz Shaw in recent years than we would have liked but despite having to cut back on his travelling somewhat he maintains his ever present in this event since his 2002 debut and this will be his ninth consecutive appearance in the race. Will start no doubt eager to dispel the disaster of his 2007 title race where from pole he started a favourite, only to see his race end within a lap with mechanical problems. Starting potentially on the sixth row could ease any pre race pressure and you would certainly expect him to move forward from this position. Will probably need a big crash or two at the start among the front runners to be left in a position to challenge for the podium but more than capable of better of his current best performance of fifth.

379 Stu Cayzer
World of Shale Points Position: 6th (71pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 6th (2004)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 6
World of Shale Debut: 2003
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn May 29 (23pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 5th (84pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 2 (July 24 final and July 25 Grand National)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (1 final)

2006 Mildenhall track champion Cayzer could perhaps be seen by many as a dark horse here but that is unlikely to phase this experienced shale race who is likely to instead reveal in the role of underdog. His hard work this season has again paid off and he enjoys a potential row three starting place on the grid where surrounded by superstar names he will give every bit as good as he gets when this one gets underway. A welcome return to the World of Shale grid after missing the big race for the first time since his 2003 debut last year and should he make it through the first couple of laps still in the frame he’ll be a serious contender for the podium as on his day he is as good as anyone around Mildenhall. Has also hit his Mildenhall form at the right moment with victory in the red hot July 24 final followed by winning the Grand National the next day which will make his the most recent winner of the 32 starters.

392 Mark Short
World of Shale Points Position: 29th (25pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 1
World of Shale Debut: 2004
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall May 22 (25pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 10th (55pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 0

There is clearly something about Mark and the World of Shale at Mildenhall. His sole outing in this event was the 2004 championship at Mildenhall and all of his qualifying points for this year’s return to the grid came from the May 22 qualifier here as well. One of the most likeable and laid back characters in the formulas who enjoys a great ‘take it as it comes’ attitude, Mark won’t start this race with lofty expectations of his predicted success and instead will be very much glad to be a part of the event again and racing against some of the sports big names. Has had a mixed season at Mildenhall in 2010 with three of his five outings producing scores 13, 16 and 25 while the other two were a nil point and single point effort, the latter coming at the last meeting on July 25. From so back it remains to be seen how much progress he can make but you can almost guarantee he’ll be smiling when the chequered flag waves.

401 Barry Goldin
World of Shale Points Position: 3rd (164pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 2nd (2006)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 4
World of Shale Debut: 2006
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Coventry June 5 (29pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 18th (34pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (May 22 heat two)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 4 (1 final)

The former World and National Points Champion has done pretty much everything there is to achieve in the sport but like so many other drivers with a CV as impress as his, it still fails to include the World of Shale Championship. This marks Goldin’s fifth consecutive appearance in the race and it appears to be a title he is increasingly keen to win and this has been reflected in his dedicated campaign to the series in 2010 which has resulted in an excellent third place in the chart. His WoS campaign meant visits to Mildenhall for both qualifying rounds and in his heat win at the May round he looked as good as anyone on the Suffolk shale and very much a contender for the title tonight. Failed to match that form when he returned in July but showed his true never say die grit which always makes him a threat. From his starting position he holds a lot of cards heading into the first bend and many eyes will be glued to the 401 car when the flag falls.

433 Steve Lilley
World of Shale Points Position: 27th (30pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 6th (2006)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 2
World of Shale Debut: 2006
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue May 3 (19pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 39th (11pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 0

Another of the underrated shale racers, Steve makes a welcome return to the World of Shale grid for the first time since 2007. Has not enjoyed the best of success from his Mildenhall trips this year with just 11 points from three meetings which doesn’t bode well but he will seek some comfort from his uncanny ability to survive the toughest challenges and this will be no different. Starting towards the rear of the field is likely to be a help as it will allow him to monitor the early action before plotting his move. A good bet to go the distance but it will take a lot of work, and a pinch of luck, for him to improve on his personal best. Guaranteed to give it his all though.

448 John Wright
World of Shale Points Position: 31st (23pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 9th (2008)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 3
World of Shale Debut: 2000
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Sheffield April 12 (8pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 36th (13pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 1 (no finals)

Having made back to back World of Shale Final appearances in 2000 and 2001, it was a long wait to 2008 before this underrated shale performer returned to the grid and he’ll be pleased it’s not taken so long to make it back for his fourth appearance although John will probably be the first to admit that from potentially the back row he’ll be hard pushed to better his 2008 effort of ninth. Has struggled somewhat at Mildenhall this season with just 13 points from four meetings and this included failing to score across the July weekend. However from this position he starts with nothing to lose and free to enjoy the big occasion, something he’ll no doubt be delighted to be a part off.

488 Liam Bentham
World of Shale Points Position: 12th (58pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 1
World of Shale Debut: 2009
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue May 3 (19pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 52nd (6pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 1 (1 final)

A relative newcomer to the shale scene, Liam’s World of Shale debut ended without a top 10 finish but a solid run in the qualifying chart means he has proved last year’s appearance was no fluke and he’s back for another crack at the top 10 here. However his Mildenhall form this season suggests he could face an uphill struggle. Just six points from three meetings and we’ve not seen him since the May 22 WoS qualifying round. Starting in the middle of the pack is unlikely to help as he’ll be right in the thick of it at the start but if he makes it through the first five laps in one piece his confidence will be sky high and he’ll be well positioned to try and move towards the front. Will no doubt be aiming for maiden top 10 in this event which would be a fine achievement if realized.

494 John Dowson
World of Shale Points Position: 22nd (42pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue May 3 (16pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 65th (2pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 0

One of the sports most dedicated, regularly travelling from his northern base to race on the shale venues, John paid Mildenhall a visit back in May, albeit with limited success. Nonetheless his hard work this season has paid off and he is most deserving of his debut outing in the World of Shale Championship and with limited expectations he will be free to enjoy the occasion and consider anything that comes a bonus. With nothing to lose from his starting position he is another to keep an eye on in the opening laps which could be his best opportunity to make progress. Likely to be aiming to go the distance and a top 10 finish would be a wonderful achievement.

495 John Cayzer
World of Shale Points Position: 10th (64pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 3
World of Shale Debut: 2002
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn May 29 (23pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 13th (51pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (May 22 Grand National)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 1 (no finals)

Described as BriSCA F2 Stockcars’ most experienced racer, John Cayzer’s experience of this race is somewhat limited with sporadic appearances since his debut in 2002 and this will actually mark his debut outing in a Mildenhall staged World of Shale Final. Somewhat surprising to report that he remains without a top 10 finish in this race to his name and he will surely regard this as a great chance to put that right, especially as he starts in the top 10. Positioned well behind the star laden front four rows John will put his years of experience to great use to not only survive, but thrive when the race starts and if he makes good progress he will not give up his place without one hell of a fight. It could only take the smallest amount of good fortune for him to finish this one on the podium.

Although not 100% confirmed we firmly believe Barry will be the 32nd driver on the grid this weekend marking his fourth appearance in this race. Snatched a last gasp place on the grid with a fine display at the final round at Mildenhall and will no doubt be delighted to be a part of the major event although from the very back he faces an uphill climb to finally break his World of Shale duck and post his maiden top 10 in the event. Finishing is likely to be his first target and if he does make the top 10 that would be a tremendous achievement.

606 Andy Palmer
World of Shale Points Position: 1st (243pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 1st (2007, 2008 and 2009)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 10
World of Shale Debut: 2000
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn May 29 (44pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 1st (149pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 3 (April 10 Heat 2, May 1 Final and May 22 Consolation)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 16 (4 finals)

The reigning and defending World of Shale Champion has already made history by becoming the first driver to win this event three years running but now he looks to re-write his own record by making it four in a row as he returns to the scene of his maiden WoS title win. He has certainly put himself in a near perfect position to achieve this feat, not only starting in pole but also starting the race as both the Mildenhall track champion and the leader of this year’s series. Furthermore he (alongside 871 Mark Simpson) has won more races at Mildenhall this season than anyone. However his three wins all came from the first three meetings of the year and he has not taken the flag at West Row since May 22 which could be a small concern. Likely to be a bigger concern is the number of big guns who start the race behind him and he knows a bulls eye appears on his rear bumper when this race starts. If he gets away he’ll be hard to catch and those behind him know that only too well.

662 Steve Wycherly
World of Shale Points Position: 9th (65pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 4
World of Shale Debut: 2004
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue June 27 (27pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 9th (62pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 2 (May 1 heat one and June 19 Grand National)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (no finals)

One of the sports underrated performers, Steve Wycherly is surely looking forward to this year’s big race as a golden opportunity to break his disappointing run of form in this event which could not be another further from his ability and potential to shine in this race. Four previous World of Shale Final appearances are yet to bring a top 10 finish but from the inside of row five he could be perfectly positioned to more than put that right on August 28. Furthermore he starts immediately behind the star studded front four rows and should disaster struck in front and he successfully avoid the mayhem he’ll be a leading contender for the podium. His Mildenhall form remains strong as one of only nine drivers with multiple wins here in 2010 and last season he enjoyed more than one final win at West Row. A dark horse maybe but a very solid bet for the top 10 at the very least.

702 Allen Cooper
World of Shale Points Position: 2nd (205pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 1st (2003)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 9
World of Shale Debut: 2000
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue June 27 (33pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 2nd (123pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 2 (April 10 Grand National and June 19 heat two)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 9 (1 final)

An non racing injury meant last year was the first World of Shale Final to start without the 2003 champion since his debut in 2000 but he has made a triumphant return to the F2 scene in 2010 and this is reflected in his excellent qualifying performance which leaves him starting on the outside of the front row. This could either he an ideal starting position or potentially the worst, especially given the fire power which features on the next few rows. Cooper’s return to Mildenhall came almost instantly with success, winning the GN at the season opener having been on the pace all evening, his consistency over the first four meetings meant he ended June at the top of the track championship but a disappointing weekend in July means he has slipped to second. Therefore he’ll be even more determined to take the honours here and cement his return to the sport and if he doesn’t make any mistakes, which he rarely does here, he’ll be a hard man to stop.

742 Nick Rogers
World of Shale Points Position: 25th (35pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall July 25 (12pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 25th (24pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (July 25 heat two)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 4 (no finals)

Former 1300cc Stockcar pilot, Nick Rogers rarely gets the credit he deserves as one of the sport true unsung stars, continually plugging away with great dedication to the cause and his efforts have been rewarded this season with a debut outing in the World of Shale Final which is richly deserved. Secured, and in fact improved, his grid position with his best Mildenhall performance of the season at the final qualifier on July 25 which included a heat win which will surely boost his confidence here. Arguably his grid position may benefit him as much of the early trouble should happen in front and if he is able to survive the opening five laps he’ll be in a good position to go the distance and chase a top 10 finish which would be a great achievement from so far down the grid. Guaranteed to enjoy the occasion which will be a landmark night in his F2 career thus far.

744 Tom Smart
World of Shale Points Position: 23rd (41pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 6th (2000)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 8
World of Shale Debut: 2000
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall July 25 (26pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 4th (85pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (May 1 Grand National)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 3 (1 final)

One of the big surprises heading into the final qualifying round at Mildenhall on July 25 was the need of former European champion 744 Tom Smart to pick up some much needed points or face missing out on the Grand Final. However when the time came he struck form and enjoyed not only his best World of Shale qualifier of 2010 but also his best Mildenhall meeting of the season. He has remained consistent at Mildenhall this year which is reflected in his lofty track championship position but he is surely going to be disappointing with his starting position here. However don’t expect him to stay in the second half of the field for long as he is guaranteed to give it everything when the green flag falls. Will be aiming to better his current best of a sixth place which came at Mildenhall in 2000, might be a bit much from row 12 but it won’t be for a lack of trying.

798 Mark Sargent
World of Shale Points Position: 20th (43pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 6th (1999)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 9
World of Shale Debut: 1996
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall July 25 (18pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 5th (84pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (May 1 heat two)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 5 (no finals)

Of the front runners in this year’s track championship, Mark Sargent has perhaps the most disappointing of World of Shale qualifying points ending the series 20th in the standings which means he has plenty of work to do here if he is to improve on his sixth place finish from over a decade ago. Another of the more experienced World of Shale finalists, this will mark his 10th outing having made his debut way back in 1996 and this will be his third WoS outing in a row having returned very much to the shale scene in recent years. Remains very quick around Mildenhall as he proved with a heat win on May 1 and more than once he has finished on the podium in a final this season at West Row. Had he secured a better grid position he may have been in a position to challenge again but don’t write him off as his starting position could add plenty of excitement to the middle of the pack.

886 Chris Bradbury
World of Shale Points Position: 33rd (20pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 6th (2005)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 1
World of Shale Debut: 2005
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Coventry April 3 (18pts)
Current Track Championship Position: N/A
2010 Mildenhall race wins: N/A
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 38 (13 finals)

The first of the confirmed reserves to take advantage of some cancellations among the top 32 is one of the first drivers to contact us to register his interest in being a part of the race. Certainly the addition of Chris Bradbury, who has won countless titles since his switch to the world of F2 Stockcars, is another quality addition to this star studded grid and his starting position towards the very back will add even more interest to this potentially thrilling race. This will also mark his first outing at the shaleway this season but he is no stranger to racing at Mildenhall, both in his F2 and before having won the last ever Ministox World Final here. This is somewhat surprisingly only his second appearance in this race and he'll have to go some to top his sixth place from 2005 but don't count him out as he'll be firing on all cylinders and could only need one big crash or a useful stoppage to help him rocket up the order.

871 Mark Simpson
World of Shale Points Position: 5th (91pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 2nd (1999 and 2004)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 11
World of Shale Debut: 1995
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: King’s Lynn May 29 (33pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 3rd (93pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 3 (April 10 heat three, June 19 heat one, July 25 Consolation two)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 9 (no finals)

One of just three drivers among the top 32 in this year’s series who was present in the maiden World of Shale event in 1995, Mark starts the night as one of the most experienced World of Shale finalists with only two more of this year’s top 32 having more experience of this race. However despite his amazing shale form over the years his name remains absent on the trophy, something he will be eager to put right in 2010. Twice a runner up in this event, a position Mark is sadly only too familiar with having also finished second in the still talked about Mildenhall World Final 2006 after coming up short on the final bend sort out with 7 Gordon Moodie. His Mildenhall form is unquestionable as one of only two drivers with three race wins to his name in 2010 but the lack of a final win anywhere this season is a little worrying but what better place to put that right that here. Another strong contender who will also play a big role in the predicted first bend sort out.

905 Rob Mitchell
World of Shale Points Position: 15th (55pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 4th (2007 and 2009)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 9
World of Shale Debut: 2001
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue June 27 (38pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 28th (20pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 3 (1final)

Another World of Shale veteran, Rob enjoys a milestone appearance this year with his 10th consecutive appearance in the race where he surely starts as a threat to the top 10 at least although he would have no doubt preferred a better starting position. Another whose work commitments mean we have seen less of him at Mildenhall in recent months but he was very much on the pace at the July weekend scoring 20points over the two days. Will also find confidence in one of his best WoS performances being at the last Mildenhall staged event as well as the 2009 event. Will take a lion hearted effort to improve on his personal best of fourth but he’ll give nothing less so don’t bet against it.

922 Graham Legge
World of Shale Points Position: 26th (32pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Mildenhall May 22 (20pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 22nd (31pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 1 (June 19 consolation)
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 2 (no finals)

Another rated addition to the Mildenhall scene, Graham burst onto the F2 scene at Mildenhall at the World of Shale qualifier in May and made everyone sit up and take notice with a storming drive in the Grand Final which ultimately produced an excellent third place finish. Followed this up with a consolation win the following month and picked up a handful of points on the Sunday of the July weekend to not only secure a maiden outing in the WoS Championship but also leave himself just outside the top 20 in the Mildenhall standings. Another driver who won’t start this race with big expectations of making the podium, he’ll surely be thrilled just to be a part of one of the big races of the season and will be gunning to go the full distance and maybe challenge for a top 10 finish if the opportunity presents itself. One thing is for sure, as he proved on May 22, he won’t give up very easily at all.

968 Micky Brennan
World of Shale Points Position: 34pts (20pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: 5th (2007)
Previous World of Shale Appearances: 3
World of Shale Debut: 2007
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Sheffield April 12 (13pts)
Current Track Championship Position: N/A
2010 Mildenhall race wins: N/A
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 12 (4 finals)

The second confirmed reserve for this years race was also very quick to register his interest in the event should a place open up and it will now be a warm welcome to Mildenhall for the reigning world champion Micky Brennan who will make his first and only appearance at the Suffolk venue during his World title reign. This will also be his fourth consecutive appearance in the race but he is yet to top his debut outing of a fifth which was at Mildenhall and that could be a confidence boost for him but he will have much to do from almost the very back of the grid, although that will be nothing new to him. Another star performer for this years race and another whose starting position will make for compelling vieweing and add even more excitement to what promises to be a thrilling start to the race. Don't expect him to stay near the back for very long.

995 Michael Lund
World of Shale Points Position: 24th (36pts)
Best World of Shale Performance: N/A
Previous World of Shale Appearances: Debut
World of Shale Debut: 2010
Best 2010 World of Shale Qualifier: Belle Vue June 27 (12pts)
Current Track Championship Position: 47th (7pts)
2010 Mildenhall race wins: 0
2010 race wins (up to and including August 4): 1 (no finals)

Another of the season’s success stories, Michael Lund is bound to overjoyed to have simply made the top 32 and be a part of the big race for the first time in his racing career. Has struggled somewhat at Mildenhall this season, having picked up a few points at the season opener he then failed to score again when he returned for the July weekend which doesn’t present a good omen ahead of this race. However this is unlikely to phase him, qualifying for the first time is a major achievement and he’ll be out to enjoy the night and pick up a whole load of experience, would be wonderful to see him go the distance.

Andy Palmer Interview

In the lead up to the biggest BriSCA F2 Stockcar race on shale this season here is an exclusive interview with defending champion 606 Andy Palmer

Are you happy with your grid position and starting on pole position?

I don’t think there is a good place to start in a race like this. If you’re at the front you have everything to lose but if you’re at the back you’ve nothing to lose but a long way to get to the front. I don’t think this race can be won from near the back with so many top drivers towards the front so if you want to win that’s where you need to be. I want to win it again so I suppose I am happy to start on pole. There is no point making any plans in your head about what you’re going to do beforehand though, you’ve just got to take it as it comes. You never know what to expect when you’ve got people like Barry (Goldin) and Dave (Polley) behind you but then again I had Barry behind me last year and I got away so that will be my aim this year.

Who do you think your biggest rivals are this?

There are so many to be honest and it seems that all of the top names on shale this year are at the top of their game. Whoever wins this race is going to deserve it, that’s for sure because it won’t be easy and I really hope it’s me. I know my run of winning this race has to end sometime but I hope it’s later rather than sooner. I’ve had gold on my roof now since 2007 and I don’t want that to stop. I think my brother-in-law Allen (Cooper) is going to be one of my biggest rivals. He was gutted to miss last years race after he missed most of the season and after I won he told me I wouldn’t have it so easy this year so I know how much he wants it. I also think Mark Simpson is going to be a serious contender because he is going really well on shale at the moment.

Back in 2007 when you first won the title, the last time the event was held at Mildenhall Stadium, Colin Eardley sprung something of a surprise finishing second. Do you think we’ll see anything similar this weekend?

To be honest I don’t. There are just so many big names at the top of their game starting at the front that I don’t think you’re going to see any big surprises this year. I think the winner is going to come from the first four or five rows on the grid. But I do think there are some drivers starting at the back who are capable of coming through for a good position, my pick would be Chris Bradbury to do well based on how he is going at the minute on shale but I don’t think he’ll be able to win from so back.

How important is the first bend going to be?

I think the race will be won and lost in the first three or four laps and it’s definitely going to be hard. But with a small track at Mildenhall the front runners are going to be in traffic within five or six laps and that is going to play a big part, especially with so many big names at the back of the grid who will not want to be lapped so they could make it very hard for anyone. I think it could be tough for me as I’m going for my fourth win which could make me a marked man, I certainly won’t be able to trust anyone.

How do you fancy your chances?

I think they are as good as any. I’ve been going very well on shale this year and I feel much more comfortable at Mildenhall than I did last year at Sheffield which I don’t like very much at all so that counts in my favour, but this anyone’s race. The track conditions will also play a part. If it’s wet that will definitely favour me and Allen, if it’s bone dry then Mark and Barry are going to be contenders and if it’s slick keep an eye on Mark Thoms.

How will you be feeling in the minutes leading up the race?

I’ll be nervous, I get nervous before every race and this will be no different. The legs will be tingling on the rolling lap but when the green flag drops there will be no time for that, it’s time to get on with the job.

Is there anyone you would like to mention or thank?

My family, especially mum and dad, dad spends an awful lot of time on the car, my other half Heidi who is very supportive and Randall Motorsport.

Fascinating Facts

Our thanks to Dave Hamar for providing this interesting facts about the BriSCA F2 Stockcar World of Shale Championship

The inaugural race for the title ‘World of Shale Champion’ was held in 1995 at King’s Lynn.

For the first two years, there were no qualifying rounds. The championship was contested at a single meeting where drivers simply qualified for the title race via heats and a consolation. The present system of qualifying rounds commenced in 1997.

Seven different tracks have staged the World of Shale final, with this year’s venue – Mildenhall – having hosted the title race the most times. The championship meeting on 28th August will be the sixth time that the Suffolk circuit has held the event.

Prior to this year’s event, 149 different drivers have raced in World of Shale finals. Only one overseas driver has raced in the event – H30 Toon Schut, at Mildenhall in 1996. Toon has also qualified in the top 32 for this year’s race.

Seven different drivers have held the title of World of Shale champion. Four of those seven drivers have qualified directly for this year’s event with a fifth being listed as fourth reserve.

Drivers who have taken part in World of Shale finals as reserves have finished the race in top ten places on seven different occasions, but never higher than eighth place.

One driver, 70 Brian Shadbolt, has featured in all of the fifteen previous title races – and has again qualified directly for the event in 2010. Brian’s best finish to date was third at Skegness in 1999.

Of the 32 drivers who have qualified directly for this year’s race, eight have not previously raced in a World of Shale final.

Between the top 32 drivers in this years qualifying points they have a combined 136 World of Shale Championship appearances between them

Of the 32 races held so far at Mildenhall this season for the formula there has been 21 different winners and each of the six Grand Finals held so far in 2010 have produced a different winner. 16 of these race winners have qualified for this years World of Shale Championship.
