General Meeting Information

MEETING INTRODUCTION

We are on the road now to one of the highlights of the year at RDC with the 2016 1400cc Banger Suffolk Open Team Championship on Good Friday March 25 at Mildenhall Stadium.

The popularity of this event has once again been absolutely incredible so much so that once again we are delighted to report that the meeting has once again proved hugely popular the event fully booked with an incredible 41 teams of up to six drivers confirmed for action and even more remarkable is that this year several teams where unfortunately still turned away who had hoped to take part.

This means we could see over 240 bangers in action on Good Friday meaning this could be one of if the biggest meeting of the year in terms of car numbers at least not only at RDC but anywhere in the country in 2016.

RDC is delighted with the line up for the event which looks very impressive on paper with defending champions Team MotorBitz facing a tough test to retain their titles on a day where the battle for the most entertaining team silverware could be as fiercely fought for as the championship itself.

It will be a big meeting on March 25 with 10 heats each carrying an entertainer award the all important Grand Final for the top eight teams Accumulator qualifiers for the non qualifier and American Style Destruction Derby to wrap things up plus a full programme of Ministox racing too with the young guns appearing in an open meeting featuring drivers from RDC and other promotions.

This page has been designed to bring you all the information you need about this huge meeting and will be updated regularly in the run up to March 25. Use the links below to find the information you want quickly or simply scroll down to see the entire page.

INTRODUCTION

The 2016 1400cc Banger Suffolk Open team championship looks to continue the recent run of massive Good Friday events at Mildenhall Stadium with a whopping 41 teams booked in meaning as many over 240 bangers could be in action on March 25 and most encouragingly over 170 drivers have already been named for this meeting by their captains.

On paper the line up is perhaps one of the best we have ever seen at this meeting with the standard of the local and RDC teams as good as ever but the wealth of visiting drivers and teams booked in to race is better than we have ever seen and together it makes for a mouth watering line up.

While many teams will be at Mildenhall on Good Friday seeking overall championship glory many will be in attendance simply for entertainment value and the afternoon's entertainment awards are likely to be even more fiercely contested than the championship itself.

In the banger section of our Good Friday area we have everything we hope you need to know about the big day with the full line up of teams and drivers a big team by team preview to follow comprehensive details of previous Suffolk Open team championships and more.

Don't forget to check out the General Meeting Information section at the foot of the page which contains important information on the running of the meeting.

TEAM PREVIEW

It is always encouraging to see new blood at any event and this year’s 1400cc Suffolk Open team championship is no exception and we start with the Good Friday debut of the Allsorts after a couple of recent 1500cc Icebreaker appearances. While the team is new to this one, most of the drivers are not so track experience will be no issue here and they could be a very interesting team for the afternoon. One of the many teams who fit into the bracket of being capable to spring a surprise and make the final eight but perhaps more likely to be too busy getting stuck in to worry about that. Second generation young guns 51 James and 511 Jack Licquorice have proved excellent additions to the RDC scene in the last couple of years and will be well at home here as they have already shown a knack for impressing at team meetings. Fellow Wisbech based young gun 212 Mario Kart has also quickly shown much potential and was in good for at the Micro meeting in the Winter Series while 317 Mr Thug readdresses the experience balance, bringing many years of service to the sport to the team. Completing the team and perhaps fitting the team name very nicely are a pair of overseas visitors with Emmen pairing 48 Foppe Minnema and 827 Sjirk Hansma. The former visited for the His and Her meeting in 2014 while the latter is perhaps best known on these shores for his massive Rover P4 wreck at the Peewee meeting in June but he is usually well involved on home soil at Emmen which should make him a good fit here.

The first of two teams entered by 72 Billy Bond is the interestingly named BDSM and you would expect their intentions to be pretty clear although to be fair this team has a good amount of drivers who are more than proven points scorers which could make them especially interesting to monitor as the afternoon wears on. Their first heat could be crucial and may shape the rest of the afternoon as with Team Starky trio 88 Fat Face, 868 Jorji Stark and 878 the Rocket on board, all three being especially useful in small cars, they could easily make it to the final. Having said that we have seen more and more of their crashing side on home turf at King’s Lynn lately so it would be no great surprise to see that continue here. Especially with the company they have for the day with 3 Toby Bond, Smallfield points champion 135 Spud and Leveller 759 Bitch all much more known for their wrecking skills, it remains to be seen which half of the team rubs off on the other more but many will be hoping this will be another crashing team for the day.

Years ago the Wonderbras were a common sight on Good Friday and the all-female side weren’t just making up the numbers either, making the final on a frequent basis and finishing second on one occasion. Sadly the team drifted away from this event several years ago which makes it all the more welcome to introduce the Better Halves for the first time, a team which underlines the raised profile of women drivers competing at Mildenhall and in National Bangers in general in 2016 which is an excellent thing and all six here have sufficient National Banger experience that they should not be overlooked and are dark horses to make the final eight although they may need all six drivers to be scoring in the heats to achieve that. 899 Mrs Battle and 95 Jade Harboard made headlines at last year’s RWD Championship qualifying for the final where Jade won the DD and we are seeing more and more National appearances from the two, the former doing this meeting in 2015 for the Dover Girls. It’s great to see 127 Mad Helen back in the National having spent more time in the lady only classes the last couple of years and she brings bags of experience to the team as does 96 Bam Bam who is former final winner at Mildenhall while 514 Blondie and 818 Tiff Collins are also enjoying more and more meetings with the men now, the latter another to race here in 2015 while the former won the Micro DD at Lynn in December.

Former Mildenhall Team Champions Bits and Bobs are always ones to keep an eye on at the Mildenhall team meetings. Comprised of a number of the most underrated stars of the RDC scene they are usually among the contenders for making the final on Good Friday although they have yet to make the top three but if things go awry for them they will happily join in the crashing and no doubt consider entertainer silverware as good as anything else. 303 Wayne Linsdell remains one of RDC’s most underrated and on his day can rival anyone while former white and yellow grade series final winner 517 Sidderz is close behind and we are seeing more and more his crashing side these days. We’ve not seen as much of his brother 512 Sean Cooper but when we do he is usually lively and we would expect nothing else here and similar can be said for young guns 47 Archie and 246 Jimmy Butts who are also useful points scorers but just as good at getting stuck in when needed.

Yet another new side for the Good Friday fold is Team Black and Red and these first timers could prove strong contenders for the title should they have a few good breaks on the afternoon with a team of very quick racers, the majority of which have a good amount of shale experience to call upon although in truth the majority race more regularly at Skegness these days. The most recognisable driver here is 361 Wally who as a former British and TSR World Champion has no problem with big performances at Mildenhall and on shale and will surely look to lead by example in a meeting format he tends to thrive in while 289 Ricky Haresign brings plenty of experience and a never say die attitude to the table and while the likes of 361 Jordan Pesterfield, 366 Ben Dowse, 395 Goldie and 744 Brad Wright are not the best known names on the National scene they are all capable of racers on the Rookie Banger scene at Skegness and have looked at home in small car sessions at King's Lynn to make for a promising team.

Another team making their Good Friday debut is Team Blue and Black who have been enjoying more appearances elsewhere including a lively showing at the 1500cc Icebnreaker. A team more so of small car racers but ones who are always lively whenever they are in action and it would be a big surprise to see anything different here as the smart money has them pursuing entertainer awards and they could be a decent bet for the entertaining team prize. Former Micro UK Open champion 551 Jacko Jnr is capable of scoring well when needed but is increasingly more known for his crashing and you suspect this afternoon might bring that out of him. We’ve usually only ever seen 021 Aaron Colbert, 661 Shaun and 662 Dalton Smith at our Micro meetings so it’s great to see them in something different here and they will be eager to leave a mark on the day.

Sticking with the imaginatively titled teams and we have Team Blue and White who also make their official Good Friday debut in 2016 although once again this is a team whose drivers we are mostly familiar with, several having previously visited this meeting in the past while the team has enjoyed numerous lively appearances at Startrax and the smart money would expect more of the same here as on paper at least they don’t strike you as a team which will be overly interested in making the final but they could be another to be in contention for the entertaining team prizes. Led by 9 Tom Jordan who enjoyed an excellent showing here in August at the Unlimited Suffolk Open and a fast rising livewire of the Northern scene he has some very useful company. 269 Mozza joined Tom on his visit last summer and was also well involved which is nothing unusual for him while the likes of Stinkbridge regular 04 Mikey, 210 Callum McKee and 281 Lewis Tingle are all very much cut from the same cloth so many will hope for some action when these guys are on track. 195 Luke Wagstaff is a little less known on the National scene but this could be the perfect time to remedy that and will be eager to make an impression.

Switching from the newcomers and we have the Crunchers, a team which is certainly no strangers to racing on Good Friday but surprisingly it is a team which has perhaps not had as much success as you would expect, another team yet to make it to the podium and in fact rarely seen in the final. It would appear that on the surface this is because the drivers involved tend to take the afternoon more as an opportunity for fun on the crashing side rather than worrying about taking things too seriously. And we often see them clash swords with some drivers who they have a rivalry with and spend the day settling some old scores. Last year saw numerous altercations between them and Team United so could that be something which is reignited here. However they again have more than enough talent to make the final eight so it will be interesting to see their intentions. Second generation racer and former Junior Banger champion 9 Ben Cox enjoyed a great rookie season in 2015 which included qualifying for the British Championship and the same could be said for 730 Bubba who is already looking set to have quite the year in 2016 with a fine showing in the Winter Series and we are also seeing more of his crashing side. 60 Dan Rea and 566 Zippy Jnr are as fast as anyone around Mildenhall and are leading contenders for some good points while 619 Rhino makes a welcome appearance and will be eager to make it count.

If we are being honest we are not 100 per cent sure if this is the Good Friday debut of the Desert Rats or not but if it isn’t it is certainly their first visit to the meeting in a long time and they are another welcome addition. Certainly the team has moved on a great deal since it was led by the Laybourn family in their memorable battle against the Midnight Runners and in truth the colours are now mostly seen at Rookie type meetings, especially at Arena. However an appearance at the 1500cc Icebreaker coupled with this one is hopefully an indication of more National meetings in the future. Arguably might struggle to make the final eight without proven big points scorers but if all six find themselves in the points they could easily spring a surprise but they are another team unlikely to be too phased about that and more intent instead on seeing what action and mayhem they can be a part of. 97 Andy, 197 Sean and 297 Paul Chapman are regulars in the colours now and have enjoyed some lively Rookie Banger outings at Dover in recent times as have 63 Shane Bullen and 661 Aaron Harris who have been Dover regulars over the years, the latter having perhaps the most Mildenhall experience of the team while 27 Luke Betts is a largely unknown character hoping to change that here.

Reigning Mildenhall Team Champions the Dover Boys continue their long legacy at this meeting as they take another stab at winning the one RDC team title which continues to elude them, having finished second on four occasions. On paper it’s one of the strongest teams set for action, not that you expect anything less but they have an increasing amount of rivals to keep an eye on here and any distractions could see them fall short of capturing the title they need for a full set. However if they are able to stay trouble free it would be a big surprise to not see them in contention come the end of the afternoon. Unlike previous years they only have one reigning champion in their ranks with TSR World and Points Champion 673 Darren Fendley but with the likes of former RDC points champions 188 Victor and 898 Andy Battle alongside there will be no shortage of points scorers while 116 No Luck Nat, former Spedeworth and World Champion 294 Stuntman and former Masters Champion 349 Finbarr are also more than capable of boosting the teams tally but all six will be just as skilled if settling scores becomes the order of the day.

Late additions to the line-up The Export Crew jumped at the chance of a place when one opened up and bring a rather varied entry to the meeting which contains some similarities to the Loveable Rogues teams which have competed recently at the Icebreaker events. The presence of Spedeworth World Final runner up 122 Mark Cooper Jnr, Stockcar ace 161 Billy Smith, former World of Shale Champion 837 Martin Wesby and the very useful 921 Jack Aldridge could make them good bets to make it to the final eight as all are fast racers and certainly the latter duo have shown excellent form in small car events in the past. The racing form of 187 Jack Goodey and 477 Ricky O'Nell is perhaps a little less proven and their form on the afternoon could prove critical in the final outcome of the team but just as likely as they are to challenge for a spot in the final they are to instead have no such intentions and instead spend the afternoon mixing it on the crashing front. And away from the pressures of their home scene this is actually a fairly likely scenario and certainly one many fans would like to see as they are all just as skilled at wrecking as they can be at points scoring.

Making a very welcome return to the Good Friday line up for 2016 is popular Northern entertainer the Grave Diggers who make their first visit to this one in quite some time while in the meantime we have enjoyed their company at the Unlimited EA and Old Skool team meetings instead. And their company is always welcome as this team is almost always only in town for one thing and that is action and many will be hoping that is their agenda here which means more crashing injected into the programme. 114 Adam Jackson’s attack on 331 Boxer Jack at one of those aforementioned unlimited team meetings and his subsequent celebrations of stopping one of the sport’s all-time greats remains a fond memory and the whole team will be looking to make more memories here and with the likes of 110 Ten Men, 112 Daft Daz, 119 Sam Richards, 513 Stevie G and 467 Mad Mark in tow, all best known for their crashing hopefully we’ll get some here.

No strangers to team meetings in 2016 or big meetings in general it's rare to see any meeting of any great significance without representation from Team Grey and Black and Good Friday is no exception with the reigning and two time unlimited EA team champions looking to add some more team championships to their CV and with the absence of their biggest rivals at present, DWO, the path could be clear for them to add to their success here and as former 1500cc Icebreaker champions who would bet against them. However the absence of DWO isn't to say they don't have regular rivals here so they are likely to be kept busy but that probably still won 't stop them from being leading challengers so they decide to be as their ultimate fate is likely to be in their hands. 2Litre World Champion and World Cup and former Supreme Champion 382 Chubby lead the way and they have some serious back up with points champion 275 Rusty rapidly becoming one of the sports elite and former Hot Shots Champion 180 Sparky is without doubt one of the sports leading crashers. 312 Whitey once again guests for the team and is an impressive young gun who should be watched for and Junior Banger graduate 10 Leeson Briggs-Price is one of many eager to leave an impression.

Back on the subject of Good Friday virgins and we have The GRT who are another example of the wonderful amount of new blood being pumped into this year’s meeting and this is another interesting side whose intentions will be exciting to watch unfold. Largely this is a team of underrated stars in the sport but there is certainly enough talent and potential there for them to turn some heads, both on the points scoring and damage fronts and so it will be interesting to see which avenue they go down, although of course they could opt for both! 87 Damien Matthews is perhaps the best known at Mildenhall and has made increasingly frequent visits here in the past and is an increasingly talented racer, both on the racing and crashing front and will be looking to enhance that reputation on a big stage here. 123 Kieron Gray also turned heads at the Mildenhall Winter Series, finishing an excellent second having won a race at every meeting including the final at the 1400cc round and he also put in some big hits on the way. 80 Shane Matthews, 130 Kyle Warren, 325 Craig Lathan and 959 Andy Sewell are perhaps less known on the national front but again this is a great chance to remedy that.

Another team making a welcome return to the Good Friday fold for the first time in many years is the Gypsy Crew. What makes this appearance all the more welcome is it marks a very rare, for 2016, appearance in smaller cars as they tend to mostly stick to unlimited machinery these days. Again they are a team whose name will immediately suggest an intention to spend the day keeping busy on the crashing front which is usually the case when they are in action these days, more often than not continuing their long running rivalry with the Predators but with an absence of their more well-known enemies here it will be interesting to see what their game plan is. With 273 Mad Mouse and 411 Chucky set for action you would expect him to be the thick of it and we’ll wait to see if son 723 Jake McClagish follows in the family business. Not for the first time the team has some international flavour with another visit from 87 Dippok who will be aiming for a better time than at the unlimited Icebreaker where his infield attack let him down and earned him an early red card while this could be the English soil debut for 64 Alice Kappert who has also been lively in recent times at Warneton, the team rounded off by Reliant regular 664 Gump making his first banger outing since a massive Triumph wreck a couple of years back and it’d be no surprise to see him just as involved again here.

The second of the aforementioned teams entered by 72 Billy Bond this year is HBDSM and like their stable mates the smart money would suggest these guys to not be here looking for points but instead looking for action which makes their presence all the more welcome as it should help produce a lively afternoon. But again the team has the ability to throw a curve ball and surprise with a place in the final with the likes of 286 Dan Phillips and 632 Reedy Jnr all highly proven race winners and points scorers and if that is their goal on the day they could easily get the team into the final eight on their own and it could be made all the more easier if 695 Micey has similar intentions as he is also a capable racer but also a skilled crasher depending on his mood. But again will the other side of the team rub off on them as Bond, 170 the Weener and 321 Chatty Man are best known for their entertaining sides which the majority will expect to see here, another squad which could easily challenge for the entertaining team prizes.

As already detailed there are a good few team names making their return to the line-up this year and the latest is the Jokers which used to be a regular side at this one but recent years have seen the remaining members compete with other teams who were short of a full squad. This year the roles are somewhat reserved as originally we had a team of Raiders set for another visit but with less and less of the northern based stars set to be in attendance the decision was taken to switch the team to the Jokers after 276 Adam Rowell had guested for the Raiders in 2015. Regardless of the name, the outcome is likely to remain unchanged and this is yet another side who will be here to take the afternoon in the manner intended and won’t be taking things too seriously with enjoyment the number one priority. With a good all round mix of drivers they might struggle to make the final eight or claim the entertaining team award but it would be no great surprise to see them pick up some points and silverware during the day. TSR duo 231 Alex Smith and 232 Steve Pope could be the best bet for points while Rowell, 284 James Head, 902 Rhys Mills and 949 T Bone will leading the crashing charge.

Not discouraged by the issues of 2015, Team Loyal are welcome returnees after making their Good Friday debut last year where they, as expected, spent the afternoon kept busy on the crashing front and took home several mangled looking motors and the smart money would expect similar things again here, especially as on paper the team doesn’t leap off the page as obvious title contenders. While all somewhat underrated, 91 Lee Herbert, 193 Nick North, 274 Tommy Grantham, 714 Luke Edson, 766 Craig Ruckley and 893 Joe Glew are all proven wreckers and you would imagine that when brought together it might only bring out the best of their crashing sides so expect a lively showing here from a team that are perhaps dark horses for the entertaining team silverware.

Now almost part of the Good Friday furniture the Mad Hatters are back for another outing at a meeting where they are almost always heavily involved and a day where they have previously taken home some massive wrecks. This season could be an interesting Good Friday as there is far less of the regular rivals who they are typically known for battling on a regular basis so could that leave them free to make a concentrated effort on the title for the first time or will they instead see it as a chance to just make some new rivals. Certainly many fans will hope it’s the latter as when they are on their crashing game they are among the best in the sport. But with former World Champions 390 Gibbo and 399 Jonny Atkins on board you cannot rule out their championship credentials although the former is also one of the leading entertainers at present when the mood takes him as is 392 Baino who is almost always in the mood for a crash as is 611 Bieber. 601 Bling is a somewhat new addition to the team and is capable of doing whatever they require as is former Supreme Champion 439 Sutty who guested with them at the 1500cc Icebreaker.

The first side entered by 10 Ben Collins this year doesn’t actually feature him in. Team Mates are another side we are seeing more and more off at our team meetings and were excellent additions to the Old Skool team meeting last year and with two sides from the stable this time we expect twice the fun and you again get the impression that this will be the main objective here rather than chasing points which should result in greater action from this side. This is perhaps especially so with this team where 4 Sam Nice and 308 David Martin are perhaps the best chances for points on paper but are also just as likely to get stuck in with their team mates come the day while the likes of 275 Chris Cooper, former Ministox racer 320 Charley Streeton, 330 Karl Jones and 723 Hot Dog Joe are more likely to be found on the crashing front, which could well inspire the others to do the same.

However Team of Mates may have a slightly different outlook, especially after their recent success at team mates at King’s Lynn including winning the 1500cc Icebreaker thanks to an excellent showing from former Nutcracker champion 830 Stretch whose form does appear to have stepped up since switching to TSR and he’ll look to show that here. With former Hot Shots Champion 527 Michael Norman and the increasingly impressive all-rounder 10 Ben Collins alongside there is more than enough to suggest a solid attack on the final eight at the very least, especially if the underrated 430 Andy Jones is on form. 142 Jack Lower however is much better known for his crashing exploits although if the team needs him to race he is very capable of doing that just as well and so their final outcome will likely depend largely on their moods heading into the day and especially after their first heat.

Looking to replicate history are Team Motorbitz who are gunning for a third consecutive Suffolk Open team championship this year and match the incredible winning streak of the Young Guns in 2007, 2008 and 2009 although in fact reigning British and Mildenhall Track Champion 313 Craig Osborne and new Winter Series Champion and former Supreme, World and RDC Points Champion 328 Dan Lathan are already three time Suffolk Open team champs, having helps Norfolk N Good win the title in 2013 but there is no denying how much they will want to hang onto the titles here and it would be a brave person to bet against them with an especially strong side this year. The absence of Team Jackpot has certainly strengthened their ranks with brothers 337 Pretty Boy, 1500cc National and former TSR points champion 338 Wingnut and 339 Jack Garrod on board for the first time, it’s an impressive side which is rounded off with the vastly underrated 326 Ratty who is just as skilled at racing as he is crashing. Big favourites on paper and more than capable of holding their own should they become targets as well.

The story behind the Odd Ones has been a highlight of the lead up to this year’s meeting. Just before the deadline for captains to provide at least some of their team 19 Dove Toe Joe informed us he may have to cancel their booking due to the intended drivers withdrawing from the meeting. Put in custody of contact information of drivers looking for a team to race in, he assembled a full team of six in around 24 hours and we’d imagine no-one in the team will be familiar with all, or even half their team mates making for an interesting dynamic but we suspect these guys will be happy to just be here and will enjoy whatever the day throws at them. Joe remains one of the sport’s most underrated stars and underlines all of what is great about the sport while Leveller 685 Dan Wilkes could be a good bet for some entertainer silverware as might travelling mate 650 Phil Barker and 760 Harry Spencer, 532 Keith Voysey and 559 Alan Archer are likely to pick up some results during the afternoon.

It almost wouldn’t be Good Friday without the Motley Krew and this year is no exception with the annual team meeting outing from this legendary side but it’s just the Old Skool Krew from them in 2016 but we don’t expect any less fireworks from them with another hugely explosive side which will be mixing it with pretty much everyone they cross paths with although you would suspect their lingering rivalry with the Dover Boys could continue here if they find themselves against each other. 311 Helm remains one of the sports all-time greats and is often overlooked in such discussions but will probably remind everyone of why he is considered among the sports elite here and 384 Goldie will no doubt enjoy an afternoon in his old team colours which tend to bring out his crashing side. 105 BillBob, 46 Pecker, 316 Mr Cush and 538 Curtis Salvage likewise are proved crashers but have also the ability to pick up some good results when the mood takes them, as the former proved at the pre 70 last May but you would expect on this day it will all be about the crashing.

The second team from the Cruncher stable is One Shot who are also regulars now at this meeting and a side which always looks forward to the Easter weekend for this meeting and this is no different. Again this collection of the sport’s underrated performers could very easily mount a challenge for a place in the final eight if they were all on form on the day but you suspect things will be far too laid back in their camp who that to be the target, although they would no doubt be thrilled if it did happen. Instead they are more likely to enjoy all the day throws their way, whether it be a few good race results or big hits and don’t rule out some silverware in their clutches by the end. 319 Shaun Clarke and 562 Gavin Barnes are perhaps the best bet for points here, the former in fine form at the 1500cc Icebreaker at Lynn in February while 238 Graham Garrod, 419 Mossop, 420 Maff and 712 Alex Hudson are all useful scorers you cannot help the feeling they won’t be worrying too much about that at this one.

Another team making their return to the Good Friday line-up after their debut in 2015 is Team Reem which is another interesting and encouraging development for this meeting as the team is best known for their exploits in the domestic (Rookie) Bangers at Spedeworth where they are among the liveliest factions at Spedeworth. Of course the more knowledgeable readers will be only too aware that these Rookie Banger formulas are far from limited contact these days, especially at Spedeworth, and so these guys are likely to again to be a good fit here. 191 the Entertainer will be best known to those at RDC and his switch to the domestic banger class at Spedeworth was certainly a boost for that scene and you would expect him to take this chance to enjoy his crashing skills while 307 Martin Kent and 405 Rudey are also no strangers to the National action at Mildenhall. That is perhaps not so much the case for 297 Aston Leather, 400 Lee Kingsnorth and 528 James Bailey but all will be eager to impress here.

Another team name we are very pleased to welcome for the first time to both Good Friday and an RDC team meeting is the Seasiders but again the majority of the drivers involved here are no strangers to Mildenhall or this meeting. However the fact that for the first time the King family have entered a Seasider squad is further proof of their remarkable commitment to the RDC scene which has been a huge positive over the last year and again their presence here is nothing less than massively positive. This is yet another team which is capable of doing whatever it pleases on the day, they have the skills to be a part of the final eight but again you have that feeling that won’t be on the to do list here and instead this will be just about having fun and enjoyable themselves which usually means crashing. 204 Charlie Boy is arguably one of the sports most underrated stars and is among RDC’s finest in 2016 and will look to again show why but brother 205 Gava is a rapidly rising star who often turns heads and father 206 Kingy remains one of the all-time greats and this is set to be the first time the Odd Job Memorial trophy winner will race together with his two sons. Throw in family member 209 Oliver King and this is likely to be a huge afternoon for the family. 426 Mark Pope and 558 Rob Haines are regulars in the domestic/Rookie Bangers at Spedeworth but again they look more like how Nationals should in 2016 so they will be right at home here.

The Good Friday debuts continue and the latest is another hugely welcome one to this meeting with the ever entertaining SHB squad who make their first appearance at an RDC team event. Having been present at the 1500cc Icebreaker in massive numbers with over 20 drivers they will be here in much more modest numbers with just one team but you would imagine the game plan will be very much the case as it has been on previous trips to Mildenhall including the Micro meeting in December and the non-Mondeo Suffolk Open in July where they were both highly involved and they are another team who are on the , not very, short list of teams you’d expect to challenge for the entertaining team prizes. Certainly the likes of 571 Mark Quinsey, 573 Rambo and 633 Leeroy Haywood are increasingly known crashers in the sport but 213 Musket and 502 Tyler Bloomfield are quickly closing up and 165 Ben Randall could prove an interesting addition, known more as a racer you have to wonder if the company here might reveal a different side of his character.

When it comes to crashing, you rarely have to look further that the Team Sowter ranks who have been injecting plenty of action into the RDC scene since they made the first of their now regular visits to Mildenhall and they too are quickly becoming regulars at this meeting despite not making the greatest number of small car outings in 2016 with unlimited cars much more their preference. Regardless of the size of the cars they race it would be a huge surprise to see them doing anything other than crashing here although they did make it to the final last year and should they do the same again here it could throw a spanner in the works of some teams. In 388 Lump and 884 Tom Filmer we arguably have two of the sport’s leading stars at present, their commitment to the sport and dedication for destruction being absolutely second to none and while we’ve seen a little more racing from 288 Carl Sowter, no one will mistake him for his wrecking ability and 883 Chunk is rapidly closing the gap between him and his team mates as the youngest member of the regular quartet while Squad guest 403 the Pie will only add to the carnage levels created by these guys.

Speaking of The Squad and they are the next team on our preview making their second consecutive appearance at this meeting although this year the team has been entered by a different captain in the shape of 311 Golden Boy underlining his new allegiance with the famous white and red spots outfit. He is joined by family member 245 Stephen Lown and it will mark a rare occurrence when the Lown family cross paths with the Mad Hatters, something which has always generated fireworks as seen at the 1500cc Icebreaker. But chances are the rest of the team will back their team mates up which could make for some explosive encounters should they meet during the day, 400 Chip rapidly becoming established for his massive hits and he was well involved at the recent Micro meeting while 419 Stephen and 520 Rob Haynes and 501 Justin Gildan will be looking to do exactly what this long running team is best known for.

The Good Friday virgins continue and it’s also the warmest of welcome to Team Stig who are poised to be another team whose progress on the afternoon will be interesting to monitor. The team took the spoils at the Micro team championship at Yarmouth in December and likewise should not be overlooked here with six capable racers who could easily mount a challenge on the top eight but you suspect they will need the whole team to be on top form to get that far. Again they are unlikely to be very worried at all about getting that far and this will just be about enjoying themselves but expect a few points to be scored and perhaps more importantly a few cars to be wrecked along the way. Brothers 317 Stressed and 817 the Stig are rapidly becoming excellent members of the RDC scene and will be ones to watch here and have now introduced brothers 292 Harry and 428 Ben Airey to the Mildenhall madness and both have impressed on previous visits. It’s been a while since we have seen 621 Gruff here and he’ll look to remember what he’s been missing and 313 Toby Trenter is another eager to leave a mark.

Another of the sports most famous team names over the years is Stinkbridge and like some of the other famous team names seen here the side has gone through a massive transformation in recent times and while the team here may not look like that which boasted the name in previous years, the intentions are likely to be the same and that will mean action is first on the priority list. What is also worth noting that from speaking to former legendary members whose family members can be found here is that loyalty was always key in this team so expect these guys to have each other’s back all afternoon and they are unlikely to be far from the action front. 211 Jordan and 219 Matty Hall are among the better known drivers here while it’s cool to see Reliant Robin regular 122 Lee Waddington making a four wheeled appearance. 410 Jake Calvert is almost always well involved and 99 Anthony Booth could be one to watch for while 156 Dan Beckwith is likely to be another of the day’s largely unknown stars eager to impress.

Another part of the Good Friday furniture at RDC, unfortunately we see less and less of the Thattadoo boys these days which makes their presence here all the more welcome and comes on the heels of them finishing an excellent third in 2015 which is likely to rank as a career highlight for the team and something they would no doubt love to repeat and while no one will pretend that goal will be easy to achieve it would be foolish to rule them out of qualifying for the final. But if all else fails, another team capable of injecting plenty of action into the afternoon with several lively customers, in particular the likes of 500 John Atkinson, 585 Big Ears and 590 Darren Smith but the latter two have also been decent scorers in the past, Big Ears having a habit of thriving especially in small car meetings while Smith was a recent podium finisher in the Masters Championship. 291 Gary Turner enjoyed a lively outing at the Winter Series and the son of Dangerous Brothers member Mick will look to impress again while 125 James Fewings and 586 Slim are usually in the thick of it some way or another.

Continuing the theme of teams which make up the backbone of the National Banger scene at RDC and our team events and we come to the ever lively TPL faction whose presence is always welcome as it usually spells more action on track than if they weren’t with us. They shouldn’t be mistaken for a team who are not capable of challenging the leader boards as they certainly are as we have seen on many occasions and they were finalists last year, it’s just their usual plot is one of a crashing basis and again many fans will be hoping this is the case this year. Rising star 622 Jack Baker along with 509 Dikey are maybe the best bets for points here as is 620 Mr G depending on his mood come the day as he is just as likely to go for some entertaining silverware which is probably where you will find 619 Chingey and 704 Streety for most of the day while newcomer 623 Eddie Lane is another looking to make a mark after a lively Winter Series.

Forming from the ashes of the former Team Relentless comes Trailer Trash, finally making their RDC team debut after their planned Old Skool debut didn’t go as hoped and much like the team which many come from this is a side of underrated performers who very easily could be a surprise package on the day, both on the racing and crashing front as the majority as talented at both but again they will most likely enjoy the day’s proceedings and won’t measure it by glory but instead by the size of their smiles. It’s a welcome return to action for the always entertaining 179 the Leg-End after his career was seemingly ended by a back issue so it is great to have him back on track and hopefully it will be the first of many more and likewise it’s brilliant to see 928 Tyrone back out after other commitments have kept him away for too long and he is likely to be well involved. 95 Anton Martin is among RDC’s most underrated and most committed and is finally getting some results to match his determination while 217 Lewis Tilson and 890 Ryan Anderson aren’t regulars at Mildenhall but have shown promise on previous trips and they should fit in nicely here regardless of the team’s tactics while 115 James Martin caught the eye in the winter series, making the final at the last round and he will look to do the same again here.

Runner’s up last year and indeed for the second time in the history of the event were Twisted Metal whose second place finishes more than a decade apart must be some kind of record but they are still looking for that elusive first victory in this event and that is almost guaranteed to be their target here again and it would be a brave man to bet against them, especially in this format as they are all very well suited to the small cars which only boosts their chances of a first time win but at the same time they are team who should not be crossed as they are equally skilled in fighting their battles. Leading the team are former Unlimited Suffolk Open Champion 37 Dave Lewis who enjoyed a tremendous season in 2015 with a podium finish in the British Championship and leading the track championship for several weeks. Son 36 Ricky is proving increasingly useful and has a habit of going the distance in busy and lively races which will likely be important here while 26 Hacker is always a good man to have around in these kind of meetings, the smaller cars typically bringing out the best in him and 322 Foxy is another who is superbly skilled at these kind of events but also seems to have precious little luck in the livelier contests as well, something he’ll be eager to put right here and that could make a difference. 159 Darren Scarrow and 307 Jon Joe Cunningham bring plenty of experience and speed to the team to complete a very capable squad.

Yet another example of the teams who make up the backbone of this event in the current era are the Underdogs who are also another example of the teams we get at this meeting comprising of the unsung stars of the sport and their presence really does help make the Good Friday event what it is with so many teams who take part, not expecting fame or glory, just to have an enjoyable afternoon in the presence of a massive field of cars. Having said that several members of this faction have the potential to shine on the day and while they are more likely to challenge for entertainer awards they should not be overlooked from making it to the final eight especially if the likes of former Allstar Dash for Cash and 1800cc Suffolk Open Champion 400 Gibbo is on form. 313 Scottie Dog might be better known for his wrecking ways but he could easily bag some points as well as could 452 Cori and 352 Ben Mynott but this is typically one of those meetings which sees them getting stuck in. Being RDC registered for 2016 suggests we might see more of 233 Mark Carter who is another capable of bagging some useful points while the intentions of 599 Matty on the day could be a difference making, one of the breakout stars of 2016 he often excelled on the entertaining front but his Martin Seex Memorial Final win proved he is also a skilled racer, many fans will no doubt be hoping to see the former side here.

It’s something of a different line up this year for Team United, another team which is no stranger to the Good Friday line-up but with some of their regular racers from recent years racing with the Seasiders and Team Reem in 2016 they have a slightly different look to their team although again it’s one likely to be well involved. Yet another of the many teams with more than enough talent in the side to compete for at least a place in the Grand Final but we’ve said that before and typically they spend their day busy on the crashing front as this meeting often seems to be a chance for them to let their hair down and get stuck in away from the pressures of their regular thing. This is especially the case for 688 United Jnr who enjoyed a breakout season at PRI in 2015 highlighted by his fine display in his epic Cadillac at the Firecracker. He is again joined by 385 Craig Thurlow, another regular in the domestic/Rookie Bangers at Spedeworth but give their lively nature at Ipswich he will be well equipped to shine here as should young gun 521 Jack Coveney and hopefully this will be the start of more National outings for this promising second generation racer. 143 Dan Rose has long been a team mate of United Jnr and is no stranger to team battles and will be ready and willing to back any of his team mates and joining the squad this year are 138 Little Jay and 141 Jake Steward who are both very underrated crashers and should that be the order of the day for this team they could prove very lively indeed.

Another team fast becoming regulars at this meeting are United Nations who also downsize to one team for 2016 and again it is a very varied team once again boasting some international flavour as well. Yet again this is a team with the potential to make the final eight but yet again you feel that will not be in their game plan when things get underway and enjoying the action, especially the action side of it will be the priority and many fans will be hoping that will be the case as they have the potential to be lively contenders here. 211 Mr Nos is fast earning a name for himself on the continent with increasingly frequent trips to the UK and will look to continue that form here while 319 Little Monkey makes a welcome return visit after scoring an entertainer award at the 2014 His and Her meeting and an excellent showing at the Accumulator Championship. Increased appearances have seen 390 Dazza improve tenfold while 547 Babyface and 427 Big Dave bring plenty of experience to the team, the latter perhaps their best bet for points and 828 Kev Richie completes the side looking for another lively afternoon which tends to be his trademark.

Finally we welcome back the always entertaining Wild Boyz who have become something of regulars at this meeting and their presence will be welcomed by most as it all but guarantees the action levels will be higher than if they weren't here. Winners of the entertainers league at the 1500cc Icebreaker at King's Lynn and they will most likely be aiming for similar glory at this meeting. Their success that day was in no small part down to 149 Wayne Bailey who entered an early contender for performance of the year and he would love nothing more to replicate that here but so too will the rest of the team, especially the equally crash happy 43 Bish while brother 143 Glenn Bailey and 469 Michael Scalley will be out to ensure the more familiar members of the team don't hog all the spotlight and guest driver 223 Dingo will also be aiming to make a mark as will former British Champion 811 Pistol Pete makes another welcome appearance in the colours and could be their best bet for points although there is a good chance that in this company crashing might take a priority which many will welcome.

ENTERTAINER AWARDS

This years Suffolk Open Team Championship will once again feature a bonus for the teams who like to get stuck in as each of the six heats will carry a trophy and prize money for the best entertainer/wrecker as will the Accumulator qualifier and DD.

There will also be sets of trophies for the three teams deemed the most entertaining teams. These trophies will be awarded after the Grand Final

This is in recognition that several of the teams competing are not interested in winning or even making the final and are out there to entertain the crowd and get stuck in.

SMART CAR AWARDS

There will also be a number of smart car awards on offer to reward those who have excelled in the paint department for the event.

There will be two smart team awards who teams who have on a whole turned out well presented cars and a further six awards for individual awards for those who have stood out.

MINISTOX MILDENHALL TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 5

Joining the 1400cc Bangers on Good Friday, as is tradition will be the 11 to 16 year old young guns in the Ministox as they do battle in round five of their Mildenhall Track Championship which has already served up some superb action and incredibly competitive racing.

We were last in the company of our Ministox racers on March 12 where each of their races were hugely exciting and close fought contests but they continued a quite remarkable trend we have seen so far this season and that is that with now 12 races completed in the 2016 championship we have yet to see a driver take the chequered flag more than once.

Add to that only one driver, former Mildenhall Track Champion 356 Harry Overy, has finished in the top three in more than one Grand Final so far this season (winning the January 2 main event having finished third in the December 13 Grand Final) to further underline just how wonderfully competitive this season has been already this season.

320 Luke Dorling, a heat winner on January 31 and runner up in the January 2 Final, took the first major spoils of the year when he got the better of December 13 heat winner 370 Rowan Venni in the final round of the Mildenhall Winter Series to take the title but Dorling failed to replicate his impressive points scoring standards in January on March 12 and with RDC Drivers Champion 304 Tony Elbourn (a heat winner on January 2) enjoying a fine evening’s work which included a pair of top three finishes, he ended the night tied on points with Dorling at the top of the Mildenhall standings.

They currently hold a useful 20 point advantage over their nearest rivals but with two points between former RDC Drivers Champion 301 Josh Rayner (a heat winner on January 2), Overy and reigning RDC Points Champion 399 Cole Atkins, the race for third place could not be closer and these three will be eager to try and close the gap on the top two here, Overy looking to make the most of a drop to the blue grade after a pair of very disappointing meetings from his return to the red grade at the last two meetings.

Not to be outdone heat one winner last time out 339 Harry Atkins, January 31 final winner 344 Danny Elbourn and Venni are currently tied for sixth place in the standings just four points behind the aforementioned group and they too will be looking to make ground. Like Overy, Venni will be hoping to take advantage of a drop to the yellow grade after a severe drop in form at recent meetings while his heat win and second in the final on March 12 will see Harry Atkins start from the blue grade for the first time here.

There are several grade changes coming into effect at this meeting which could shake things up. While Harry Atkins had to settle for second in the main event last time out, it could not have been any closer as he pretty much pushed 390 Nina Leigh across the finish line, the success in the main event earning Leigh a sought after return to the yellow grade which has also been achieved by Suffolk Champion 328 Ben Nichols who claimed the evening’s other race win on March 12 and joining them in the yellow grade will be 364 David Shearing who has also dropped a grade after a disappointing start to his return to RDC year and he will be a big threat from the yellow grade here.

The season’s other race winner so far is 308 Molly Smithson who will be looking for more success here but the contenders are not restricted to just the RDC based racers, west countryman 902 Brad Compton Sage becoming a regular visitor in recent meetings and he and Scottish Points Champion 629 Ewan Millar filled the podium spots in the final at the last Winter Series round to demonstrate their improvement on the Suffolk shaleway in their recent visits. Similarly 259 Bradley Eltham nearly scored his first podium finish in the second heat last time out but was pipped at the post in yet another nail biting finish, likely to only make him more determined here.
