The 2009 staging of the unlimited banger Suffolk Open Championship raised a staggering field of 158 cars to Mildenhall on July 11 with drivers from all over the country, 190 Pikey, 239 Nemesis and 262 Axle from the deepest west country to the Mob from Scotland plus 250 Geert Hoekman (240) from CAMSO. As you can from the attached list the quality and quantity of material on hand was nothing short of mind blowing while the standard of presentation was equally high. Car of the meeting for many was the 1960s Chrysler of 520 the Undertaker, said to be one of just three imported into the county from the states. On top of the aforementioned list there were Supras from 114 Gary Jackson and 280 Simon Goodale, the latter’s returned from the Battle of Britain, 159 Darren Scarrow and 117 Terry Bradley returned Jaguar XJ-S’ and there were Omeags from 205 Kieran Briddock (estate), 511 Helen Licquorice, 715 Mick Prince (estate) and 898 Andy Battle. All cars are Volvos in the report unless indicated otherwise.

Following the traditional grand parade 41 cars gathered for heat one, the track in sublime condition with the forecast rain staying away at this point. It didn’t take long for the action to start as the smartly turned out 491 Jason Warren (240 estate) fenced 701 Ryan Atkins’ Mk2 Granada and 128 Shippy blasted 138 Jason Smy’s hearse to trigger the first train of the night. 448 Mad Chris blasted Smy to splinter the latter in a hearse on hearse encounter with 440 Pete McVay (240) blasting the Daimler in turn only to take one from 22 Dave Vincent (Mk2 Granada) with King hammering the former world champion. 67 Sparky now weighed in with a roof bending shot on 76 Ryan Scott (Mk2 Granada) to leave the track completely blocked for the first time on the night. 688 Steve Collins (XJ) homed in for a head-on to 188 John Reeves’ 740 estate as 363 Sam Trim (240 estate) now blasted 600 Josh Robinson and 148 Shorty (240 estate) fired into 152 Mr Grumpy only to take one from 576 Colin Aldred (Mk2 Granada) with 488 Duane Collins (XJ) completing this train. 188 Victor recovered to put the boot in on King as the luckless Robinson was pounded by 488 United who copped it from Battle and he added the Gypsy Crew man to the heap on the start line. Returnee 24 Ian Mallion (XJ) laid into Shippy hard as 814 Mark Millen treated 363 Trummer to a portion of Westy while 88 Ashley Burton (240 estate) to hammer Victor. Smy now blasted Millen who aimed for Sparky and delivered a T-bone but this left the former open to a rate hit from 440 Pedro. The Mob man had his Volvo leathered by a stunning shot from Shippy with 425 Mr Vauxhall blasting the Cedric in turn. Vincent meanwhile nailed 917 John Millen (Mk3 Granada estate) to start another train on the inside of the blockage as 224 Dave Canham (XJ40) and 888 Simon Jay (Mk2 Granada) weighed in. Mr Vauxhall now attacked Trummer as 131 Barry Wade (240) dished out further damage to Pedro before Battle slaughtered Mad Chris with a epic shit. He took one in turn from the form Shippy with 128 Mark Adkins blasting the latter in turn. 411 Matt Franklin now turned round to attack Mallion who shrugged it off to assault Warren before coming under fire from Shippy. Franklin meanwhile dished out a head-on to Licquorice as Warren hammered Atkins only to take a head-on from Victor for a his troubles. 924 Mr P5 and Sparky went head to head as did Victor and 119 Davey Cox (240) before Canham turned round and delivered a big hit on Victor, running the latter into the blockage to boot. Sparky now arrived with a crunching hit on Canham but he was T-boned by 455 Alex Ramsey (740 estate) for a his trouble, Sparky swiftly evening the score with a head-on. 455 Ako rallied back to hit Victor on the nose but again felt the sharp end of Sparky before the reds came out with precious little moving and all hope of a way through the blockage being found disappearing. 119 Cruncher took the win on laps completed, Licquorice the only other recorded finisher and Sparky the best entertainer.

One less for heat two which kicked off with 726 Kalin Dawe (Mk2 Granada estate) burying 104 Mick Siddalls vintage Jag with 648 Kyle Guyler (240 estate) blasting the former only to take one in turn from 474 Matty Threkeld (240 estate) who felt the sharp end of 602 Shaun Cooper (740 estate) as once again the track become completely blocked by the start line in a matter of seconds. 550 Bungle homed in on 207 Michael Woodward (240 estate) and 435 Action Man used his wicked Fleetwood limo to rattle 579 Mr Clumsy into the pit bend wall. 525 Wes Starmer (240 estate) blasted 196 Chip’s smart P5 but he copped it from 267 Frenchy in turn as 136 Ash Pexton (240 estate) blasted 347 Craig Yates’ Mk2 Granada. 282 Mr Mad also scored on the latter while Dawe picked up 269 Dean French (240 estate) and buried him into Mr Mad which allowed 604 the Younger Cooper to wreck Dawe before he copped a big shot in turn from 474 Matty. 648 the Dart now pounded lone Barton Boy Siddalls as 254 Barry Pomfrett (Mk2 Granada estate) added more damage to Dawe with 269 Popeye blasting the former in turn. Siddalls was punished by both 303 Wayne Linsdale (XJ40) and the Dart as Mr Mad recovered to blast 41 Loopey Lee and 257 Jamie Neve (Mk2 Granada) nailed the Dart with Action Man then picking up and following in the former. 620 Guy Whitehead (Mk2 Granada) blasted the Caddy in turn but took one from 271 Marc Dalgarno (240) as Matty destroyed Loopy Lee with a rated shot. 223 Bushy meanwhile blasted Mr Mad to clear a way through the blockage as 525 Wes turned round and delivered a massive T-bone to 262 the Verger’s Daimler. Frenchy meanwhile picked up 273 Kevin McClagish (Mk2 Granada) who picked up the Undertaker with the latter delivering a hard T-bone to Loopy Lee, Frenchy staying on 273 Mad Mouse to run him into the massive pile-up. Matty then arrived on time for a stunning blitz to Frenchy’s limo as 730 Deano turned round and blasted 183 Bobby Wilmer (240 estate). 252 Steve Bugler (240 estate) opened his account with a shot on the Dart but he copped it from Matty with 547 Tony McNeil using his lush XJ to blast the latter in turn. Deano now attacked Popeye as 58 Martin Dalton (Mk2 Granada estate) hammered Bushy and Deano treated Whitehead to a head-on. Popete now turned round and blasted Bungle as Deano destroyed the Undertake with a big shot. Dalgarno now piled into the still occupied Younger Cooper as Deano took hits from Bushy and 252 Boogie. 545 Karl Hough (Mk2 Granada) managed to escape the pile and duly rammed Dalgarno as Boogie finished the Undertaker with another big hit on the Valiant. Deano finished 545 Huffy with a head-on as Boogie piled into the game Younger Cooper only to take one from Deano to leave the latter as the last car running in another awesome wreck up, Matty taking the entertainer award.

Up to 43 cars for heat three and no let up in the carnage. This one began with 290 Tramp following in 79 Ricky Twell (240 estate) as 239 Nemesis blasted 192 Fat Head and 3 Terry Peacock (Mk2 Granada) stuffed 324 Mark Latham (740 estate) before Jackson blasted the Mk3 Granada of 393 Rob Chiddle. 208 Jimmy Randall (XJ) hammered the luckless 79 Twelly only to take one in turn from 384 John Golden (240 estate) while 673 Darren Fendley (740 estate) blasted 166 Murphy. 401 Steve Hemmings (240 estate) now blasted Peacock and we enjoyed another train as 322 Rolly blasted the former but Predator revenge was swift thanks to 879 Reg Reed (240 estate). 165 Ritchie Jarrod (240 estate) nailed 101 Richard Rayner (XJ40) but took one himself from 210 Steveo as 145 Chris Abbott (240 estate) scored on 209 Minge but paid when he was destroyed by 341 Andy Jones’ XJ. Bradley blasted the Posh Wash man in turn as 205 Koonta met 349 Michael Allard on the nose and 466 Big Job scored on 503 Odd Job. Tramp turned round to hammer Fat Head in an all P5 encounter while Nemesis scored with a T-bone on 250 Joy Rider before we enjoyed another all Rover session as 165 the Reaper and Fat Head met on the nose. 208 the Finger blasted Jarrod with Peacock scoring on the Runner in turn but he was then hammered by hits from 310 Chas Lee and 190 Pikey. 333 Danny Webb turned his ultra smart Roller around and blasted 384 Goldie as Latham hammered Murphy to start another train. Rolly nailed the former only to take one from 879 Wrecked Reg with 247 Bro scoring on the Predator as Pikey rammed 401 Psycho on the nose. The Reaper T-boned Peacock but was blasted by both Rolly and 88 Speedy as Bro nailed Rolly only to take one from Nemesis. Pikey meanwhile blasted Wrecked Reg but took one himself from Goldie which the Midnight Runner shrugged off to hit Jarrod on the nose, Rolly then laying into the latter as Pikey buried himself in the boot of Webb. Lee turned round to meet Latham on the nose but the former was then destroyed by 341 Jonesey’s second massive hit of the race. Nemesis meanwhile took on the May M team, blasting Rolly before meeting Tramp on the nose, Tramp, Nemesis and Odd Job trading hits to end the race as Goldie took the flag in the first race to go the distance, Bro the only other finisher and Jonesey the entertainer.

Even with a handful of cars returning for a second heat the final heat was the first to not reach the 40 car mark, 39 making the start and this one began with a head-on between 800 Tom Hannay (XJ) and 159 Paul Farrell (740) allowing 268 Glen Seago to blast the Mob pilot as 117 Kamikaze laid into 237 Nasha. 313 Cully blasted the stretched Lincoln in turn with 19 Joe Mullarkey (240 estate) scoring on the Bad News Buick as 894 Marc Almedia (240 estate) followed in 352 Ben Mynott (740). 325 Craig Preece (740) blasted welcome returnee 553 Justin Garman (Mk2 Granada) and this triggered another cracking train. 207 Compo blasted the former but took a big hit from 362 Matt Godden’s rated Merc. 33! the Legend blasted the latter in turn with 998 Wayne Cotterill Jnr (Mk2 Granada estate) powering into the Caddy as the reds came out for a fire with 277 Des Owen (Mk2 Granada) but not in turn to stop 280 Slick from stuffing 791 Spud into 446 Lee Greer (Mk2 Granada estate). Slick was the first to show on the restart as he buried 311 Helm’s stunning P5 coupe as 508 Harry Bradbury (XJ) buried Seago only to take a package from 125 Showtime as 714 Paul Smaldon (Mk2 Granada) buried both the Legend and 761 Nat Cohn (240 estate) in one move allowing Ministox graduate 17 Kyle Overy (240 estate) to T-bone the latter. 547 the BFA piled Almedia into 501 Ste Kaye (XJ40) as 553 Garmo was torn apart but heavy shots from Helm, Overy and 159 Scarrow Boy with Helm blasting the latter in turn. The Legend meanwhile blasted 753 Gypsy Boy only to take one from Slick in turn and 19 Dove Toe Joe hammered the Toyota in turn as 998 Cotty pounded the BFA. 714 No Show meanwhile turned round to assault Helm. Seago now turned round and blasted Shippy and added him to the pile-up with had formed on the pit bend with No Show also blasted the Dingle Cedric. The BFA and Slick enjoyed a head-on with 439 Sutty blasting the former only to be decimated by a rated hit from Cotty. Overy meanwhile blew up Mynott with the Legend finishing the job on the latter as Shippy battled back and hammered Mr Moody. No Show now attacked Spud with Cotty T-boning the Posh Wash man as the Legend further obliterated Sutty’s limo. This triggered another great train as Shippy blasted the Legend only to take one from Overy who was blasted by Almedia with Team Black revenge coming when Cotty blasted the Spedeworth man. Seago meanwhile attacked Mr Moody only to take one in turn from Gypsy Boy and they all expired as Cotty hit Almedia on the nose finishing them both and leaving Overy the last car running for a dream win on his debut performance, Helm taking the entertainer award.

35 made it out for the first consolation with Mr Grumpy scoring on 830 Lee White (XJ40) early on as Mad Chris, who had done well to repair, turned round and T-boned Steveo only to be T-boned by Mr P5 in turn with Wilmer blasting the Ant Hill Mob man in turn. Adkins limo was trashed by big shots from Mr Vauxhall, Smy and Pomfrett as 154 Tony Lawton (XJ40) blasted Jay. Meanwhile the repaired Loopy Lee was wrecked again by a head-on from Action Man and a shot from Battle before Trummer dished out a T-bone to the luckless Volvo limo pilot to form yet another pit bend pile-up. Victor hammered 320 Paul Seymour (240) and Fendley blasted Linsdale as 76 the Reject homed in on 185 Polly Read (240 estate) to again leave the track completely blocked. Rayner turned round and delivered a roof bending shot on Vincent as Minge assaulted Action Man with team mate Steveo also powering into the smart Fleetwood. Speedy, who had earlier snapped his Rover when he ran into the empty Collins XJ, battled back to hammer Rayner as Shorty piled Trummer into Adkins’ wreck. Battle was punished by hits from Mr P5 and 320 Smiler as Fendley weighed in on the Reject only to take one in turn from Steveo. Trummer bounced back to blast the latter but took one in turn from Victor as Shorty struck the Reject over the front wheel. Victor took a head-on from Linsdale and Fendley blasted Shorty, these two battling over the lead. Mr Grumpy punished Read with a T-bone but she shrugged it off to ram Fendley who was now stuck in the heap. Smiler gave John Millen a solid hit as the leading Fendley opted to blast Trummer, rather than seek a way through the blockage. Shorty meanwhile blasted Smiler en route to reclaiming the lead and survived two head-ons from Trummer to take the win from Fendley and Victor, just five finishing and Trummer named the best entertainer.

A whopping 50 cars gathered for the second consolation which featured some of the biggest hits you are likely to see in 2009. Things began with Pexton blasting Robinson as Koonta nailed Greer and 196 Ben Harrison (740) hammered 508 Led Head. The Younger Cooper weighed in on Nasha as Bushy blasted Axle’s lush Crown but was destroyed by a simply titanic hit from Nemesis. Big Job then blasted the latter which further crushed Bushy’s P5 to bring the reds out and after a minute or two the Midlands pilot was able to crawl unharmed from his epic wreck to a big cheer. The race resumed with the Dart assaulting Prince before Pexton destroyed Led Head with a storming hit by the pit gate. Lone Cream Team man 456 Nathan Roberts (240 estate) buried Nasha into Greer while Mr Moody hammered Aftermath team mate Pexton only to take one from 587 Humps who copped it from Murphy in turn. Owen meanwhile followed Roberts in hard on the pit bend as the BFA slaughtered Nasha with the night’s latest stunning hit and he was blasted by Scarrow Boy. Shippy then mistook Dalgarno’s Volvo, which was in the back of Big Job’s Yank, as still occupied and he blew up the empty Volvo only to take a simple balls out shot from Mr Moody which brought the reds out to check on all concerned. With only a few cars still running the race was declared in favour of Pikey from 837 Martin Wesby (Mk2 Granada) and Prince while Mr Moody took the entertainer award.

While the raceway was being cleared from the second consolation the promised rain started to fall and by the time the final was ready to start it was coming down heavily with just 16 qualifiers making the title race which was as quiet as expected. Deano’s attack on Sparky was the only action in the first half of the race until the former turned round and stopped the second placed Matty with a massive head-on. Shorty raced to the title while the final bend saw Prince spin Pikey which handed second to Cruncher, Pikey recovering for third as Fendley laid into the Reject. Deano took the entertainer award.

It was gone 11.30pm when the gates opened for the final event and with the weather conditions worsening a straight DD was held, rather than attempt a race first. Nonetheless a fine field of 34 made it out with Psycho the first to show as he fenced the BFA as Jarrod T-boned Smiler and the Dart blasted Neve. Rayner met 154 Splitter on the nose as Tramp hammered Almedia and Showman blasted Godden, splintering the solid hearse on the road bend. Twelly dished out a roof bending shot on Whitehead but copped it from Overy in turn with Psycho blasting the latter only to come under fire from Murphy as 237 Stretch used his Buick to hammer 101 Garry Deacon (240 estate). The Legend blasted Minge but took one from Smiler as Tramp now belted Stretch only to come under fire from the Legend as Minge battled back and scored on the Verger. 196 Ginner meanwhile picked up Jarrod and buried him head-on into Deacon which allowed the Legend to blast the latter only to cop it from Twelly with Ginner completing this train of hits. Whitehead meanwhile was punished by Smiler and Twelly with Murphy zeroing in on the latter as Smiler scored on the Legend who shrugged it off to T-bone Bungle. Tramp rammed Psycho on the nose, the former then meeting Smiler in the same fashion as the Legend again stuck it to Bungle. Minge and Huffy went head to head with Bungle and Tramp laying into the former as Psycho silenced Murphy only to be finished himself by Bungle. A head-on from Minge finished the latter and Minge went on to blast Almedia while 501 Basher traded hits with Minge and Tramp. With both Basher and Almedia being out of the running for two long and neither of the P5 pilots having much left to offer a dead heat result was given between Tramp and Minge with the Legend taking the entertainer award this time.

A slightly disappointing field of 31 Ministox gathered for their Suffolk Open Championship with just three visiting drivers joining the RDC regulars, two from Incarace and one from PRI.

With the lower than anticipated entry an ‘all in’ format was deployed and all 31 contested heat one with defending champion 328 Craig Banwell under early attack from both 322 Thomas Fox and 330 Jack Thompson as 350 Thomas Parrin suffered a half spin while 561 George Barber set the pace. 324 Georgie Lee span while lying second and Banwell also went round as 391 Jake Banwell attacked 321 Ryan Mee. 376 Steve Hackett removed 327 Michael Maskall Jnr as Banwell climbed to second and 304 Joe Parker removed 386 Daniel Peters. Thompson had Fox round as Petters was clobbered by Maskall Jnr, this causing 357 Jordan Cumming to run into 383 Shane Harvey as 366 Matt Noughton had 306 Daniel Parker round. Maskall Jnr recovered to remove Parrin as the reds came out for the luckless Petters who had taken more punishment on the road bend, the race declared in favour of Barber from 317 Bryson Walker and 309 Ray Petty.

Just two missing for the second heat by which time the rain was starting to fall. Parrin led the away as Joe Parker removed Hackett and he was hit by 323 Craig Latham while 315 Triston Clayton fenced 308 Alec Hannay before the former suffered a spin as did Daniel Parker. 388 Ross Tyler then span the luckless Daniel Parker with 367 Tom Keep, Walker, Petty and Fox all crashing in to bring the reds out to check on all the drivers. 392 Reid Murray led the lap sheet order restart and duly enjoyed a great battle with Parrin as they changed the lead several times. Behind them and Tyler span Jake Banwell into the concrete to claim third as Hackett attacked Craig Banwell which in turn sent Maskall Jnr to the fence, Craig Banwell recovering to fence 302 Jordan Murray hard as Parrin battled hard for the win, Reid Murray settling for second and Tyler third.

A combination of the worsening weather and only the banger final for repair time meant only 15 returned for the final with Parrin quickly moving into the lead while Walker made good early progress from the yellow grade. Maskall Jnr struck the fence as Walker moved into second and behind Noughton, Tyler and Barber enjoyed a good scrap for third. Walker then cruelly expired just as he was to challenge for the lead and Tyler put the bumper in on Noughton to take second. Tyler then eased passed Parrin for the lead with five laps to run with Noughton quickly into second as Fox fired Barber wide for fourth, the PRI driver fighting back prompting Fox to spin him aside. However Daniel Parker then punted Fox wide to take the place as Noughton survived a collision with the spun Barber to hang onto second. Parrin meanwhile dropped to fifth as Tyler took the win from Noughton and Daniel Parker, Fox surviving a last bend attack from Parrin for fourth.

Heat One: 561 George Barber, 317, 309, 315, 376, 388, 366, 356, 321, 304
Heat Two: 350 Thomas Parrin, 392, 388, 321, 317, 309, 366, 357, 217, 302
Suffolk Open Championship: 388 Ross Tyler, 366, 306, 322, 350, 357, 309, 328, 356

Despite the rain spoiling the last two races, this was a quite incredible night of banger action with six of the hardest and most action packed races you are likely to see this year, although once again the high carnage levels meant massive clear up operations and not for the first time this meeting suffered a late start. Meanwhile the Ministox were at times the victims of circumstances, especially the weather but managed to put in some very entertaining racing as well.
