RDC's One Wild Night 2010
National Bangers BBA Supreme Championship and Saloon Stockcars

The 2010 staging of the BBA Supreme Championship attracted a superb entry of around 140 National Bangers to Mildenhall on March 27, the raceway blessed with favourable weather in the days leading to the meeting and dry weather on the night which meant the shale was in fine condition for the night. 47 of the cars on hand were qualifiers for the big race with every ORC promotion except GMP represented on the grid while the 90 strong support entry included several visitors from nearby promotions plus 275 Joe Morgan and 374 Chris Collins from Buxton. As expected the Mondeo was the favoured car but there was a little RWD interest with a smattering of large Volvos but topping the bill was the track’s first Montego hearse, piloted by 179 Jamie Phillips.

Up first was the main event with 99 Jason Jukes, 348 Sonny Sherwood and 399 Phil Cullen the only drivers among the confirmed 49 entries noted by their absence while 136 Paddy Conneoly was a late addition, leaving 47 cars for the race. Unfortunately with a handful of qualifiers arriving at the stadium shortly before start time plus much congestion at scrutineering meant the race started somewhat later than hoped for. By the time all the drivers had been introduced it was 7pm before the Incarace draw was carried out which handed 788 Dan Burton and 423 Danny Oliver the front row, the latter having two Gladiator team mates behind before the first big danger man on the grid was 617 Jack Overy who started on row four, albeit with Condom rival 203 Darren Nash immediately behind.

After two rolling laps the green flag fell and it was an explosive start, somewhat aided by slightly wet conditions from the rain a couple of days previously which meant the shale was a little more slippery than it first appeared. A huge push into the first bend saw 492 Dean Harper (Bluebird) bury 807 Chris Murfin hard as 218 Rob Speak’s race was ended straight away when he was buried into the wall by the pack. 528 Alan Hunt piled 158 Shane Davies into the heap which had formed instantly on the pit bend as Oliver made the start, row two starter 269 Greg Mulligan moving into second while 159 Darren Scarrow made a great start in his immaculate Bluebird, charging to third from row six in the blink of an eye. Defending champion 188 John Reeves span and took a head-on from 492 Mullet in an all Bluebird affair as 158 Shane Davies found Team Black rival Overy and buried him into some spun cars on the home straight. 439 Danny Sutton blasted the spun 377 Ash Tompkins (Primera) with a T-bone as 159 Scarrow Boy was bundled into the pit bend carnage by 589 Simon Smith. Oliver still led but now 208 Jimmy Randall was into second, from row seven, and track virgin 241 Liam Cracknell was behind. 269 Rex had dropped to fourth but his race came to an end a split second later when a push on the home straight send the Wild Boy into a half roll to bring the reds out instantly.

With just four laps completed, a complete restart was ordered with a depleted but still healthy field. Another Incarace draw was ordered which put lone Bear 207 Michael Woodward (Volvo 240) and 154 Mike Plant on the front row. 589 Smiffy Jnr earned an instant black flag when he rejoined the track on opposite as the green fell but nonetheless nailed 207 Compo with a big head-on which triggered another pit bend pile-up. 128 Mark Atkins used his smart Mondeo to bury 549 Phil Smith into the chaos as 807 Murf picked out Smffy Jnr for a head-on. Row three started 86 Alec Savage (Cavalier) jumped into the lead with 154 Wilis and smart car winner 210 Paul Barnes in third as 203 Gnasher continued the war with Team Black by burying 998 Wayne Cotterill Jnr. Smith span 210 Barney from contention, the Mendips young gun then clobbered by 331 Jason Jackson and collected again by 542 Craig Oliver (Cavalier). Savage led at the three lap mark with Willis still second but 361 Chris Walden (Honda) was the man on the move, moving into third having not started in the front 10 rows. Beyond that 180 Mark Foster, 432 Mark Munson (Cavalier) and 331 Boxer completed the very early top six. The Gladiators continued to target Compo as Smith delivered a fierce hit at the end of the back straight. 361 Wally moved into second with five laps completely while 180 Sparky became the first Midnight Runner to show in fourth. Smiffy Jnr continued against the flow (he was loaded for restarting on the infield and ignoring the back flag) and stopped Willis head-on, brother Smith then landing a big hit on the Blooz Boy who was then clobbered by 535 Ryan Cunningham as well. Wally now slipped into the top spot, Savage falling to second while Sparky climbed to third ahead of 432 Mental Mark, Boxer with fellow Runners 208 the Finger and 239 Steve Carter now starting to feature. Boxer lost time when he hit the stricken Willis on the nose, 525 Wes Starmer then delivering another big hit to the luckless Buxton track champion. 998 Cotty Jnr and Cracknell started trading hits on the back straight as Wally led the race to half way with Savage, Sparky and Mental Mark still his nearest rivals. 525 Wes now dished out a good hit to Smith which in turn spun 190 Steve Bailey as Sprky hauled himself to second, albeit someway adrift of Wally. The latter had a scare hen he collected Atkins, the latter nailed hard by 439 Sutty as Wally continued to lead to lap 14, although steam was starting to show from the engine. 200 Steve Farrell was now starting to appear in seventh just ahead of Murf. 53 Dave Palmer removed Atkins as Cracknell picked out Smith for a big hit. Savage cruelly picked a flat tyre and retired as the Finger got past team mate Boxer for fourth. Wally led them into the final five but was continuing to slow, Sparky, Mental Mark and the Finger chasing hard as Wes stuffed Gnasher into some dead cars on the pit bend. This allowed Murf to nail the Condom hard as Wally expired on lap 22 which handed Sparky the lead. However this lasted barely a lap as he too ran sick and the Finger came through to take his long overdue major title. Sparky nursed his car home for second and Boxer completed a Midnight Runner 1-2-3, 200 Noon wrapping the podium spots. 239 Nemesis, Sutty, Murf, Connoly, Craig Oliver and Liam Cracknell filled the top 10.

36 support cars gathered for the first heat and with the Predators and Aftermath out in force, action was expected and it didn’t take very long at all to kick off. 176 Ady Gibbs followed in 44 Roy Elborn flat out on the pit bend, the former fleeing the scene for 137 Jay Chilton to home in with an almighty hit. A split second later and 326 Shane Lynn picked up 404 Luke Brinton who latched onto 275 Rusty and he was run in full chat with 519 Lee Middleton destroying 326 Ratty with a savage shot. 100 Callum White met 237 Lee Middleton on the nose as the reds came out for 510 Dave Wilding who was in trouble on the road bend. The race resumed with a pile-up quickly forming on turn two as 262 Jason Barnard piled 77 Martin Wilkins into Elborn’s wreck and lone Blue Crew pilot 60 Steve Laybourn fenced 879 Reg Reed and 223 Brett Harrison homed in for a big hit on 912 Kieran Greenaway. 604 Ross Cooper connected with a T-bone on the spun 768 John Nutts, the latter then destroyed by hits from 223 Bushy and 779 Luke Allen. 22 Dave Vincent (Bluebird) stuffed 8 Dale Woolnough into 779 Munch as Chilton followed 77 House in big time on the pit bend. 519 Knuckles now turned round and triggered a Predator v Stanley Crew battle with a head-on to 237 Stretch. 401 Steve Hemmings turned round and blasted the latter before 38 Tom Chilton blasted the Midlands man. Vincent sparked up on the home straight as Jay Chilton turned round and Bushy happily met him in a big head-on as 401 Psycho and Stretch met in similar fashion. 324 Mark Laham (Cavalier) buried 879 Wrecked Reg into the pit with 100 Captain Cock administering an almighty hit on the former. 313 Craig Osborn registered a maiden win ahead of 262 the Verger and 603 Jon Cooper.

One more car for heat two and again action from the word go as 538 Jake Swan ran in 179 the Leg-End by the pit gate as 539 Danny Allen delivered a stiff T-bone to 4 Sam Nice (Volvo 740) as 928 Emmeron Prime (Bluebird) piled in with a splintering hit on the Montego hearse. 567 Gary Brown gave Prime a roof bending hit in turn as 771 Brendan Clarke nailed 206 Phil Milner (Volvo 740 estate) in the middle of the growing turn four pile-up. 162 Rob Wheatley dumped 793 Jamie Johns into the carnage as 303 Wayne Linsdale turned 210 John Ellison into the concrete blocks. Allen now picked up 352 Ben Mynott (Vectra) and followed him into the pit gate pile-up superbly as 206 Turkish pulled out of the pile-up to hit 101 Richard Rayner head-on. 67 Mark Whittaker nailed Clarke as 545 Karl Hough (Cavalier) took a big lunge at 415 Scott Cornish before 145 Chris Abbott hit the spun 527 Michael Norman (Volvo 240 estate) on the nose, 2 Luke Dawson hitting the former in turn. Meanwhile the pile-up on the pit bend had grown into a complete blockage in which 837 Martin Wesby (Cavalier) hammered 181 Grant Doe only to take a big hit himself from Cornish as 210 Slim hammered 545 Huffy. 67 Sparky now turned round and blasted the Leg-End hard before decimating the hearse with a series of brutal shots on opposite. Doe recovered to bury Collins into the pile as 2 Spooky piled race leader Linsdale head-on into 174 Dave Osborn, 205 Kieran Briddock then stuffing Slim into 67 Sparky’s driver door. Brown and Rayner enjoyed a head-on with Doe going in on the Runner in turn as Nice was pounded by Gladiators 174 Whipper and 363 Sam Keep. Linsdale came through to win from Spooky and Doe, just six cars going the distance.

Back to a 36 car field for the final heat but despite the presence of Team Black and the Condoms it was the quietest race thus far. However it still had plenty of moments starting with Davies making a beeline for 362 Liam Friel who first send 206 Dave King to the wall, Davies staying glued to the Team Black young guns boot to run him in half a lap later. The reds then came out to assist Cracknell on the pit bend but the race was soon back underway with Davies shrugging off an attack from 370 John Cobbold to bury 384 John Golden although this allowed Cobbold to deliver a good hit on the Condom. 309 Paul Brown (Cavalier) picked up 999 Scott Hill which saw 91 Lee Herbert (Bluebird) smashed into the blocks, the former then running the Scrapyard Screamer in as 362 Tilly recovered to blast Gnasher. 206 Kingy recovered to bury Paul Brown into Atkins as Boxer treated the spun 19 Joe Mullarkey (Vectra) to a hard hit, the Runner then fencing 210 Barney which allowed 528 Jethro to treat the latter to a hard hit. 88 Ash Burton raced to the win ahead of fellow RDC young guns 54 Martin Lawton and 382 Jack Foster Jnr.

Next up were two Allcomer races which both had a 40 car limit but only 30 were ready for the first Allcomers. This started in style though with Ross Cooper burying 730 Dean Mayes very hard by the start line as Collins blasted Scarrow Boy and 263 Scott Walters nailed Stretch which buried the latter to boot. Kingy meanwhile nailed Slim and stuffed him into 328 Danny Latham while Bushy turned round and met 730 Deano on the nose. This inspired the latter to turn round and blast Stretch who subsequently was hit head-on by Slim in a big crash. 433 Ben Smith blasted the Motley Krew man in turn as Walters again hammered Stretch and Osborn delivered a fine hit on Nutts. 130 Karl Craddock scored on Slim as Osborne dished out a savage T-bone to 67 Rickie Beasley at the end of the back straight, the former then getting followed in by 262 the Verger with Doe offering a small assist. Deano now blew up Nutts as up front Wolnough lunged at the leading 320 Paul Seymour on the final bend but the latter survived for the win, Wesby punting Woolnough into the fence to snatch second.

43 cars were squeezed out for the second Allcomers with the Predators, Aftermath, Team Black, Midnight Runners, Condoms and Stanley Crew all represented. 682 Paul Sparrow made a beeline for Psycho which left the latter open to a big head-on from Craddock, the latter nailed by 247 Lee Clarke with a big shot. Gary Brown was destroyed at the end of the home straight by big hits from 602 Mr Moody and Jay Chilton. 648 Kyle Guyler meanwhile homed in for a big head-on to the luckless Psycho but he was nailed by Wrecked Reg as a result as 603 the Younger Hitman fenced 312 Tom Reynolds’ Volvo 740 estate. Gnasher piled 801 Jack Foster into the luckless Psycho with Jethro hitting the former in turn only to take one from the Younger Hitman as 385 Roy Gedge clobbered team mate 312 Turbo on the nose. Jethro then stuffed Gedge into the passenger doors of 648 the Dart as Allen turned round hammer 349 Lewis Price (Volvo 740) with Captain Cock dishing out a big head-on to the Gladiator only to take one in turn from Cobbold. Mr Moody meanwhile homed in for a storming hit on Turbo, the momentum rolling the Aftermath man on impact to bring the reds out as Davies piled into 349 Squaddie as the track become blocked from the previous crash. The race resumed with Davies attacking 17 Kyle Overy as Wrecked Reg laid into 247 Bro before the former treated the lurking 17 Little Chief to a hard head-on. The latter bounced back and hit Gnasher on the nose with Cotty Jnr blasting the Condom in turn as 89 Joe Barrett blasted the spun Huffy on the nose. The Little Chief again blasted Gnasher as Barney stuffed 340 Colin Jones into Squaddie’s wreck. Davies meanwhile zeroed in for an almighty hit on the Little Chief on the road bend as up front 340 Jonesey smashed 363 Sam Trim into the concrete blocks as the reds came out for a shaken Little Chief. With the result declared, 363 Trummer took the win having led the last completed lap, Jonesey having to settle for second and the Younger Hitman third.

With the curfew looming the gate was held until 10.45pm for the Accumulator qualifier and 23 drivers made it but unfortunately some missed out. The race began with a head-on between Cobbold and the spun Nice, Osbourn then blasting the former which buried Nice into the wall hard, this also claiming Cracknell. 538 Swanny Jnr buried Barney, the former then T-boning Cracknell as Norman stuffed Bro into Nice. Mr Moody homed in and buried Wesby with 176 Gibo delivering a cracking hit to the Aftermath man. A pile-up on the back straight saw Deano bury Cooper superbly. Sparrow nailed the Runner in turn with 511 Helen Licquorice and Danny Oliver all piling in behind to force a way through. Bro struck Wesby over the rear wheel before Licquorice gave Sparrow a small assist in burying Deano. Tilly hit Norman on the nose on the road bend as 382 Chubby stuffed Cooper allowing Barney to hit the latter. Ben Smith took the win from Bro and Mr Moody and we duly moved into the DD. Mr Moody was the first to show with a hit on Sparrow which set the latter up for a hard head-on from Gibo. Cobbold powered into and buried Barney but the latter shrugged it off to stuff Cooper into Tilly with Sparrow then treating Cooper to a meaty hit. 60 Fat Boy blasted Sparrow in turn only to take an equally stiff hit from Mr Moody in turn with Chubby completing the train. Barney met Sparrow on the nose as Ben Smith stuffed Chubby with Danny Oliver getting involved for the first time with hits on Chubby and Mr Moody. The latter shrugged it off to hit Chubby on the nose only to come under attack from Ben Smith who was then nailed by Cobbold. Danny Oliver powered into Cobbold in turn before Sparrow pounded Oliver with several hits, a fine shot from Chubby silencing the Gladiator. Sparrow and Chubby then settled with a series of head-ons which left the former the winner and also a worthy winner of the entertainer award.

Round two of the Saloon Stockcar track championship raised another decent, if unspectacular, 26 car entry although there weren’t the same drivers, 184 Marty Colliver making his track debut while the field was swelled by west country pairing 120 Shane Brown and 964 Kenny Peters.

All out for heat one which was a superb start to the night. 728 Kris Woods struck first by firing 22 Karl Petters into the wall as 190 John Wagstaff made the running from 389 Ryan Newman and 13 Lee Petters. 305 Nigel Parker sent 127 Steve McMillan spinning as 499 Dave Aldous and 641 Willie Skoyles Jnr suffered spins. 19 Karl Stubbles lifted himself to third as 115 Scott Aldridge renewed Karl Petters to the fence and Brown sent 731 Barry Wade into a spin. Santry now took over as 190 Waggy disappeared from the frame while Aldous’ attack on McMillan sent Colliver into the wall. Woods moved into second as Waggy and 131 Timmy Barnes suffered spins before Woods moved into the lead ahead of 420 Ivan Street, Santry and 191 Shaun McMillan. 311 Steve Newman then fenced 490 Ian Jarman and this in turn caused Street and Santry to both spin leaving Woods with a big lead over 508 Lee Green and 18 Jamie Clayton. 360 Carl Waterfield removed Colliver as Green span from contention while 156 Darren Goudy dumped out Santry only to be removed in turn by Steve McMillan. Aldridge hauled himself to second as a big pit bend push saw Street rattle Wade off the wall and they were collected by Aldridge and Clayton. This promoted Newman and 219 Luke Grief to second and third before Woods was spun by a back marker blowing the race wide open. Grief grabbed the lead on lap 12 but a lap later he was relegated to third as Newman led from Brown. It changed again on lap 14 as Jarman stormed to the lead and he held on for a fantastic win from Newman and Grief. Aldous span Brown on the final bend to snatch fourth.

Just two missing for heat two which was every bit as good as the opener. Skoyles Jnr attacked 570 Simon Venni from the off as Waggy made the running again from Santry and Stubbles. Newman had Skoyles Jnr out while Lee Petters and Woods suffered spins. Aldous then had Venni round with the latter hit head-on by Brown while Aldridge slapped the wall as a result. Stubbles moved himself to second as Barnes span Karl Petters who was clobbered by Clayton, Newman and Skoyles Jnr. Street lifted himself to second as Waggy continued to lead before Newman removed Brown and Jarman hooked out Grief. A massive crash on the home straight saw Woods spin Karl Petters which sowed the seeds for a pile-up and a series of spins and crashes. Newman had Woods out in turn with Parker dumping Santry into the chaos which also saw Clayton and Steve McMillan spun before Street bundled Grief into Green. Aldous meanwhile had Barnes out only to suffer a similar fate from Waterfield as Skoyles Jnr had Lee Petters around. Waggy still led from Newman and Street as Skoyles Jnr span Stubbles before again removing Lee Petters. Waggy chalked up a long overdue maiden Mildenhall win from Newman, these the only drivers left on the lead lap while Skoyles Jnr was third, Waterfield ending Waggy’s celebrations with a spin after the chequered flag.

23 returned for the final with Parker having Steve McMillan out from the drop of the green before Street ran head-on into the spun Stubbles. Newman fired Aldridge into the wall as Lee Petters span from his early lead to have Waggy the advantage from Karl Petters, Santry and Skoyles Jnr who had made a rapid start. Waterfield walled Venni while Santry span Karl Petters into the blocks for second place. Grief removed Brown and Goudy in a single move as Skoyles Jnr raced into second while Woods was now fourth ahead of Parker, Newman and Aldous. Waggy continued to lead at the five lap mark by which point Aldous had moved up to seventh as Barnes and Clayton span together, the former recovering only to be fenced by Goudy. Woods passed Santry for third as Street span and Colliver removed Karl Petters. Newman squeezed Santry into the wall as the race hit half way with Waggy still out front from a closing Skoyles Jnr, Woods, Aldous, Newman and Grief. Parker fired Jarman into the fence and Waggy did the same to Street as Newman passed Aldous for fourth. Colliver again span Karl Petters as Waggy led the cars into the last five laps. Newman was now third with Aldous on his tail, the latter then firing Parker into Stubbles before he battled past Newman for third. Brown removed Colliver as Woods lost time with a half spin. Newman reclaimed third as Venni hooked out Woods and Aldous cruelly span from the top spots promoting Grief to fourth. Skoyles however kept his last move until the final bend, a perfectly timed last bend hit just spinning Waggy before the line to snatch the win. Aldous clobbered the spinning Waggy to shove him across the line in second with Grief third.

Heat one: 490 Ian Jarman, 311, 219, 499, 305, 120, 570, 360, 728, 131
Heat two: 190 John Wagstaff, 311, 641, 490, 305, 131, 120, 156, 360, 219
Grand Final: 641 Willie Skoyes Jnr, 190, 219, 311, 115, 360, 570, 127, 490, 499

A superb night’s racing with both formulas in excellent form. The National Bangers produced a fantastic and action packed title race while three of the remaining races were worthy of epic status, the remaining three all producing some fine hits while the Saloons were again in awesome form, the two heat races in particular being fabulous races.
