The annual Mildenhall unlimited attracted an impressive field of 88 cars with in excess of £1,100 up for grabs which enticed a massive entry of beef, certainly more than ever before at this meeting. On top of the list above the Granada entry including a used Mk2 limo for 776 Ady Groom and a fresh Mk1 limo for fellow TSR man 811 Pete Winter while the XJ line up featured an XJ-S for 70 Charlie Cunningham while top Japs was 40 Lester Freestone's smart Crown and 249 Matt Frost's Skyline, other cars from the land of the rising sun being two used Laurels and a used Cedric.

As always at this meeting a box load of trophies was dished out to all those who made the effort with material and paint while cash prizes went to 22 Vincent, 99 the Cheat, 115 Rosy and 211 Bazza for smart cars and 303 Dangerous Brian, 273 Mad Mouse, 258 Trowbridge, 698 Ling and 699 Kamakazi for top material.

24 cars for the opening heat but it was a very tame start with the dust not helping. 109 Anders Blowers started in lively fashion though using his well smart Mk2 to bury 80 Anthony Pemberthy and 100 Justin Everitt into 156 Micky Maskall while 256 Dorkins threw a wheel. Maskall recovered to attack 80 Chancey while 175 Karl Corsby (XJ) pounded 924 Matt Millen with the Ant Hill Mob man fighting back to give Maskall a roof bender but he paid for it moments later when Maskall blasted the ancient Bentley and stuffed him into the wall. 277 Des Owen put 007 Ian Laws' XJ in and 214 Marcus Ballard, in another smart Granada, T-boned 100 Compo and 131 Barry Wade (Volvo) hit Corsby in similar fashion as 917 John Millen took the flag from 364 Sean Winchester and 119 Davey Cox while Maskall picked up the entertainers purse.

A similar field for second heat but it was a huge improvement. 417 Dan Davey started strong by stuffing 564 Coatie as 73 Sims took a bone from 998 Wayne Cotterill Jnr (XJ) while Davey went in again, this time on 920 James Medley (XJ) leaving him open to a rated hit from 136 Clyde Williams. 877 Adam Perrin (Volvo 740 estate) then leathered 12 Dickie Raymond only to be trashed in turn by 148 Shorty. 536 Annette Nicholls went in on 998 Goldenballs head-on and 328 Paul Wilkes (XJ) met Williams similarly with the latter firing back to pound Goldenballs as Shorty blasted Nicholls who also felt the sharp end of Sims as 328 Wilkie again punished Williams but took one from Shorty for his troubles with 715 Prince assaulting the young gun as 799 Richard Hamilton put away 384 John Golden and then repeated the move on Sims before getting a taste of his own medicine from 321 Andy Newton. Wilkie turned it around to attack Coatie before 129 Scott Locke used his smart XJ40 to assault 121 Steve Williams (XJ). Shorty went in unaided and took a stonking T-bone from Wilkie before 384 Goldie met 129 Shaggy on the nose with 159 Darren Scarrow aiding his team mate with a hit on the Team Black pilot. 617 Jack Overy raced to the flag from 85 James Ellis (XJ) and Newton while Shorty was judged best entertainer.

Crumpled estates for 12 Raymond, 417 Desperate Dan and 877 Adam Perrin (Bishop)

A mathematical miscalculation resulted in a giant 37 car field for the final heat. 700 Woody started by putting in Lester and Dangerous Brian also buried Bazza which claimed 313 John Cullingford's Laurel as Charlie Cunningham met 414 Lee Busby on the nose as Freestone fired back on 78 Lee Macey as 297 Tappenden blasted 175 Tomo. The Cheat and 753 Young Gun went head to head as Tomo picked up 262 Robertson and thundered him into 630. Kamakazi then blasted Winter but took a rated hit from 78 Mad Mace. The Dover young gun backed off to allow Freestone a shot on the hearse splintering it further as 499 Gary Tannahill (Austin 2200) fired in on Mad Mace as the Cheat blasted Cunningham in the midst of the growing pit bend pile-up before the reds came out for Tappeden who was shaken after an unseen burial on the top bend with 313 Cully just finding enough time to blast 720 Ben Oliver. 132 John Snare started the restart with an attack on 122 Lee Channon as Robertson piled Busby into Groom's vacated limo which had already been totalled. 35 Peter Lewis (Volvo estate) assaulted Robertson with 53 Dave Palmer (XJ40) doing the Volvo with 312 Turbo also hammering Lewis before blasting 488 Steve Murrell as Robertson gave Palmer a stiff head-on. The Cheat then dumped 249 Frosty and 292 Leon Bridge and he clearly had it in for the latter as he pounded him into submission with several hard hits earning him the entertainers winnings. 823 Mick Murrell won from Snare and Young Gun with just five finishing.

262 Pete Robinson repaired his P4 for the DD and 488 Rodney came back from, this roof bender from 312 Turbo while this was the end of play for 776 Groom (Bishop)

26 returned for the consolation with 785 Les Jackson starting with a shot on Dorkins before Mad Mace paid for an attack on 80 Chancey as Mark Millen pounded him. Nicholls then stuffed Ling into the Cedric of 235 Jay Randall before Trowbridge caught the former in the door leaving him open to a blast from 785 Whacko Jacko with Mark Millen doing him in turn, the luckless Whacko Jacko then dealt a head-on by Sims with Woody blasting the Mustang as Corsby hammered the seven series Volvo of 324 Mark Latham. Goldenballs blasted Ling and kept his foot down to stuff the hearse while Mark Millen trashed Mad Mace with a good hit. Goldenballs then pounded Compo and took him into the pit bend pile-up before the lively Mark Millen sorted Cunningham but took some Gypsy Crew revenge from a big hit from Woody but Millen kept going to connect on the leading Goldenballs handing Goldie the win from Chancey and a recovered Goldenballs. Again just five finishes with Millen judged the best entertainer.

Just 23 returned for the final with Shorty again on the case attacking Chancey, a move followed shortly after by Chancey as 158 Shane Davies and Newton went head to head before John Millen gave Shorty the bone and also put in Vincent's Westy and Newton. Shorty was given a head-on by 119 Cruncher before a so far tame race burst into life just before the end when Davies turned round and wiped Overy out with a big T-bone. Young Gun also hammered Overy with Newton aiding Overy by blasting Davies which left him open to a killer hit from 39 Steve Moore (XJ), the ensuing carnage allowing Shorty to score on Tannahill and Wade. Mick Murrell meanwhile recorded his double from 841 Frank Williams and Ellis with 39 Peanut taking the entertainers prize. Another lively showing from Shorty would subsequently earn him the nights most devastating driver award.

An Accumulator was added to the bill prior to the DD and it was a popular move with the drivers as 27 came out for it. Freestone started with a hit on 695 Blowers' Hawk as Channon was punished by 331 Jason Jackson and Davies before 484 Darren Caple took one from Oliver with the Cheat attacking both of the latter duo. wWth a pit bend blockage forming again 364 Sean Winchester and Winter piled in to trash Oliver with Freestone doing the TSR top dog as Hamilton jacked Latham and 665 Stu Scarlett (XJ) was mauled by Cunningham and 348 Sonny Sherwood. Winchester fired in on Winter but took one from Steve Williams as Blowers gave 500 Bill Wenham a portion of Humber. Wilkie blasted Perrin as the lively Blowers continued with a shot on Vincent. Hamilton continued to blow up Perrin as Blowers again rammed Vincent and Davies took one from the new champion which was repaid soon after while Wilkie and Hamilton went head to head and Steve Williams scored on Blowers. 348 Mushy came through the pile-up to win with Boxer Jack, Cruncher and Davies the only other finishers, Hamilton collecting the entertainer prize.

Even with precious little time between the Accumulator and DD and the meeting running very later still 23 returned for the demo and pleasingly a large percentage of the crowd stayed and it was no doubt worth it. The field included Perrin who had worked miracles on his Volvo for the second time in the night and he picked up the hardest trier prize as a result but Ling and Kamakazi also deserve praise for repairing their broken hearse. Ling started superbly with a giant T-bone on Rosy and stiff head-on to Busby as Boxer blasted Cully and Perrin did the same on Blowers. The luckless Rosy took one from Cunningham and Vincent's shot on Latham left him open to a package from Boxer as Cunningham went in on Rosy again. Maskall and Channon went head to head with Mushy jacking the latter whle the crash happy Cunningham sorted Scarrow and Randall did Maskall. Boxer hammered Cunningham's XJ-S and continued with hits on Rosy and Scarrow after the latter had blasted Maskall. Robertson, another who had done well to repair, went in on Bazza and Cully blasted Cunningham only to take one from the rated Boxer Jack. Robertson continued with a shot on Rosy who had no reverse and was waving people into his Yank before Mushy blasted Cully and kept onto pushing, thundering him into Robertson trashing the Jap and jacking the P4. This left just Vincent, Boxer and Mushy and after a lot of cat and mouse they finally got stuck in on the top bend. Mushy gave the 6/110 a good jack but hits from Boxer and Vincent finished Mushy with Vincent giving Boxer a rated length of the straight head-on to take the win, Boxer compensated with the best wrecker prize.

A cracking field of 37 Ministox turned out for their Suffolk Open Championship including loads from PRI plus others from Spedeworth and Ringwood with 306 Darren Yates and 309 David Nash making their debut.

25 came out for the first heat, open to the white and yellows and it was a troubled race with a false start to begin with when 562 Liam Friel failed to get going but when the green fell it was short lived again as 338 Terry Garrod threw a wheel while 337 Jack Garrod was booted off the restart for spinning 514 Billy Hobb under the reds. Said restart saw Hobb hit back removing 317 Dwayne Powell as 315 Scott Aldridge went and 325 Charlie Overy and 395 Thomas Sutton were spinning while Yates got clobbered by Friel. 516 Jack Wheelwright was spun by the leading 155 Chris Gould before the reds came out again for a stricken Yates. The fourth attempt saw 549 Phil Smith earn a black flag for spinning rookie 375 Chris Church who had a black cross with Church collected by 548 Kerry Witherington, Smith spinning Overy before retiring. 301 Mark Amoss then removed Friel who was collected hard by the leading duo of Gould and 542 Craig Oliver which brought the reds out for a shaken Friel which was a bad break for Gould as he had just grabbed the lead but the result was taken from the last completed lap and so Oliver was gifted the win from Gould and 527 Roy Laybourne.

Heat two for yellows, blues and reds fielded 18 starters with 141 Willie Skoyles spinning 540 Ricky Cooper early on and then hassling 547 Dan Moulton as Amoss removed Smith while the luckless Cooper was spun by Cooper and 360 Carl Waterfield did the same to Amoss who was collected by 789 Matt Williams. As 149 Jamie Sampson and Skoyles battled for second, Aldridge held onto his lead and took a flag to flag win from Skoyles and Sampson, 318 Steven Jode spinning 333 Vicki Whittaker and 504 Billy Standing at the end and they all crossed the line in a heap, just outside the top 10.

24 cars for the final heat with Terry Garrod spinning Laybourne who was struck by Cooper as a spun Overy was hit by Powell. Cooper went out thanks to the collective efforts of Nash and Church as Williams spun Gould who took a wild ride up the inner wall onto the infield and nearly into a tractor. Sampson meanwhile survived a late attack from Skoyles to win with 171 Dean O'Dell third for a Spedeworth 1-2-3, Terry Garrod spinning 347 Sam Reynolds on the run down lap.

Strangely just 16 of 20 plus qualifiers returned for the final but it was a cracker anyway. Hobb lead early on before loosing it to 336 Steven Court with Hobb hitting the inner wall as Sampson spun 511 Liz Williams and Aldridge took over with Cooper moving into second and Reynolds third with Sampson, Skoyles and Waterfall on the move. Sampson then spun Williams for a second time and she was collected by Jode and Skoyles costing both a lot of time as Cooper took the lead but Aldridge fought back and spun him. This slowed him and allowed the pack to close but Waterfield's removal of Sampson slowed him considerably and allowed Aldridge to get clear and he won from Reynolds with O'Dell and Skoyles completing the trophy spots, Waterfield recovering for fifth while Court finished an excellent seventh.

Diappointingly just seven bothered with the consolation for the non-qualifiers but they still put on a decent show. Powell led the early laps until Smith spun him to take over with Whittaker working up to spin Smith at the end of the penultimate lap but this allowed Terry Garrod to dive through but Whittaker was not to be denied and spun him as well to take the win from Church, his first trophy, and a recovered Smith.

Heat one: 542 Craig Oliver, 155, 527, 301, 511, 519, 336, 315, 548, 325
Heat two: 315 Scott Aldridge, 141, 149, 360, 171, 592, 789, 162, 347, 540
Heat three: 149 Jamie Sampson, 141, 171, 789, 338, 347, 514, 540, 360, 318
Grand Final: Aldridge, 347, 171, 141, 360, 789, 336, 318, 542, 155
Consolation: 333 Vicki Whittaker, 375, 549, 338, 317, 309

A cracking nights action with the only down point being the late running with the DD not finishing until 11.30pm. The bangers enjoyed the best Mildenhall meeting of the season so far with some top cars and hits while the Ministox continued their excellent form this season with some more superb racing.
