MEETING
INTRODUCTION
We are counting down the weeks and days to what is traditionally one of the biggest nights of the year at RDC with RDC's One Wild Night
2016 headlined by the Unlimited Banger BBA Supreme Championship featuring many of the sports biggest names from across the country.
History was made in 2012 when the event returned to an unlimited banger format for the first time since the maiden staging of the meeting at Hednesford Hills Raceway in 2000 and the first time it was run as an unlimited event at Mildenhall and the meeting surpassed most expectations with over 100 drivers including races from all across the UK and Europe who produced one of the best meetings seen anywhere in 2012 and arguably the best National Banger championship race seen anywhere that season.
Last year continued the trend of this being not only one of the highlights of the RDC season but one of the highlights of the National Banger calendar with over 100 cars in action and one of the most action packed Unlimited Banger title races of the year with long serving star 22 Dave Vincent making history as his hard fought win made him the first driver to capture the Unlimited Supreme, Spedeworth World and British Championships and he will head what is expected to be a star studded line up again this year.
The new era for this coveted
event continues in 2016 as an unlimited banger affair and plus the new look format
starting with last chance qualifier, held for the first time in
2012. However in keeping with the
tradition of the Supreme Championship, even the last chance qualifier race will
not be open to all drivers and only those who have been invited.
And the championship winner joins a very elite club of drivers to win what is becoming one of the sports most prestigious titles and will also get to hold the annual trophy, a stunning cup which is an exact replica of the trophy which Damon Hill won when he won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Qualifying for the Supreme Championship is quite a feat in itself as all those on the grid have to earn a place either by recording a top finish in one of the designated BBA events from the
2015 season, by being the one seeded entry from their promotion or by being a
former winner of the event who has competed in the race every year since their
victory.
Qualifying has become even tougher in recent years as the reserves system once used for
each of the qualifying races from last year has now been dropped meaning an even
higher standard of qualifiers for this years race.
Invitations have been sent to all the qualifiers and those eligible for the last
chance race in the new year (that's over 300 drivers alone) and from that point
things will start to take shape as we will look to try and establish which
drivers intend to accept their invitations as well as trying to establish a list
of drivers joining us on the night for the remainder of the programme.
Joining the bangers on the bill will be the high speed, all action BriSCA F2
Stockcars who have regularly provided some high thrill, high octane action at
the Suffolk shaleway with the fastest race cars we see at Mildenhall and with
drivers who know how to use their front bumper with incredible precision, the
racing at Mildenhall is some of the finest the formula has to offer and promises
to be an exciting start to their 2016 Track Championship which is defended by
380 Steve cayzer.
This page has been designed to bring you as much news and information on the big
night as we can and will be updated regularly in the build up to
March 19. Please use the index below to guide yourself around the page.
If there is any information which you need and cannot find on this page please contact RDC either by calling 01268 412299 or 07850 683953 or by e mailing wastedmc@btopenworld.com
Latest Unlimited Banger
BBA Supreme Championship news (added March 9)
We are now less than two weeks away from our first major event of the season
at Mildenhall Stadium and the 2016 Unlimited Banger BBA Supreme Championship on
Saturday, March 19, an evening which also features round one of the BriSCA F2
Stockcar Mildenhall Track Championship.
As well as bringing you the first look at the entry list for the BriSCA F2
Stockcars for this meeting (see next news item) we have again this week updated
the entry list for the Unlimited Banger BBA Supreme Championship which sees us
remove the provisional bookings which have not been reconfirmed in recent weeks.
As previously detailed on the site, any bookings made prior to February 19 were
treated as provisional with those drivers then asked to reconfirm their
intention to race after that date and now any driver who has not done this has
been removed from our entry list although we are very pleased to say that only a
very small number of drivers have been removed from the list which still boasts
over 100 names.
We will of course continue to remain in contact with these drivers to try and
ensure the information we offer is as accurate as possible and will have more
information about the evening in next week’s news update, the last one before
the meeting but in the meantime you can find out all the information about the
meeting on this page of the site and also the official meeting preview is now
on-line on the previews page
Latest Unlimited Banger BBA Supreme Championship news (added February 24)
With the Unlimited Banger BBA Supreme Championship now less than a month
away on Saturday, March 19 at Mildenhall Stadium we have as previously detailed
begun the process of asking all drivers booked in on a provisional basis to
reconfirm their intention to race at the meeting.
As discussed previously on the website all bookings taken prior to February 19
were considered provisional and all drivers who booked in before that date would
be asked to reconfirm their booking after February 19 to try and ensure the
information we offer to fans remains as accurate as possible.
The process began late last week and while it has inevitably led to a handful of
drivers informing us they can no longer attend as planned we are delighted to
report that we still have just over 100 drivers booked in for the meeting and
more encouraging is that over four fifths of these drivers have reconfirmed
their bookings in the last few days.
We will continue to ask for confirmation from the drivers we have yet to hear
back from and should these bookings not be reconfirmed they will be removed from
our advertised entry list.

BBA Supreme Championship to go unlimited in 2012
The stage is set and the countdown has begun to one of the biggest banger events of the year at Mildenhall Stadium, at RDC Promotions and in the entire sport...the 2016 Unlimited Banger BBA Supreme Championship.
Once again the cards have been dealt during the 2015 season and during the course of the various BBA recognised championship races around the country and Europe drivers have earned the right to take their place on this star studded grid as well as earning a place in the new last chance qualifier race.
On paper the race once again has the potential to be one of the most star studded line ups for a banger championship ever seen on the Suffolk shaleway and RDC firmly believes the starting grid has the potential to rival any banger race in the sport.
There is no easy way into this race. You have to either secure a top result in one of the various championship races during 2015, finish near the summit of their promotions' points race or be a recent former champion or battle their way in on the night through the invitational only last chance qualifier.
Put simply, everyone on the starting grid will be a player, whether they be title contender or party spoiler and this race has the ingredients to be an incredible affair as many of the sports biggest names do battle for one of its biggest prizes.
Entry List
(updated March 18)
As previously detailed, all bookings made prior to February 19 were treated as
provisional with drivers who booked in prior to that date then asked to
reconfirm their booking after that date. Drivers who have not reconfirmed their
bookings since February 19 have now been removed from this list so all bookings
shown below have either been made or reconfirmed since that date.

The Qualification
Process
The qualification system for the Supreme Championship is one of the most unique and toughest in the sport
and a key reason why the starting grid each year boasts some of the finest National Banger drivers from
the previous season.
The first driver to qualify is the defending champion.
They are joined by the three most recent champions who have always honoured their place on the grid as an ex champion.
Starting with the Supreme Championship there are then 15 races during the course of the year (see the list of qualifiers for more details of these events) where three drivers qualify for the championship. These are not necessarily the first three drivers in the race but the first three who have yet to qualify for the forthcoming Supreme Championship.
Joining those qualifiers is a seeded entry from each ORCi promotion. This place is offered to the top available driver from a promotions 2015 points championship who has yet to qualify but only the top six drivers who have failed to qualify via another means are eligible for the place and all former Supreme Champions who have maintained 100 per cent attendance in the race since their victory.
Completing the grid will be at least three drivers from the last chance qualifier which is only open to drivers who raced in one of the aforementioned 15 championship races in 2014, was eligible for their promotions’ seeded entry place, raced at last year’s Supreme Championship meeting or is a former champion.
The Qualifiers
On this list we detail the qualifiers in numerical order and have also highlighted some of the championships currently held by the qualifiers just to show how much of a quality grid we could potentially have on our hands.
With invitations now having been sent to all qualifiers we have begun the
process of establishing who intends on competing in the race. Hopefully to make
things clearer we have split the list into two. Drivers highlighted in bold
have confirmed their intention to race while those shown with a
strikethrough have confirmed they will not be attending. Please note that should a seeded entry be
unable to attend they may be replaced by the next highest driver in their
promotions 2015 points standings, but only the top 10 available drivers from
the points chart are eligible for a seeded entry place.
Drivers wishing to book in can contact RDC by e mailing wastedmc@btopenworld.com. calling 01268 412299 (ideally between 9.30am and 12.30pm Monday to Friday) or with Michael Coventry direct. This list was last updated on March 16

Driver preview
Set to make his third consecutive appearance in the championship this year
is young gun 2 Georgie Lee who joined an elite club in 2015 by winning
both the PRI World and Points Championships in the same season having lifted the
KIRS points title in 2014 when he had to settle for second place in the season
long points battle at Arena Essex. His previous two appearances in the Supreme
Championship have yet to produce a top 10 finish but that should not be held
against him this year as his form is more than proven and another year of
experience coupled with a massive boost in confidence from his gold and silver
roof could make all the difference. Admittedly considered as more of a tarmac
racer but we have seen some shale visits from him in recent times including some
unlimited outings including a second place finish in the 2014 Unlimited Suffolk
Open to highlight his potential here. Going the distance is likely to be his
biggest obstacle and if he goes that far it will be surprising if he’s not near
the front at the end.
Defending the title in 2016 is one of the sport’s most successful stars of the
last 25 years, 22 Dave Vincent. His richly deserving victory last year
put him in the most elite of company as the first driver to win the Supreme,
Spedeworth World and British Championships and he remains one of just two
drivers in the modern era to win the points titles at Mildenhall and King’s
Lynn. This will be his 13th appearance in the prestigious event and he is one of
a very small group of drivers to qualify this year who competed in the first
championship in 2000. His Supreme Championship victory pulled the trigger on a
fine season in 2015 which also saw him with the final at the Heinegone meeting
at King’s Lynn, one of the biggest unlimited events of last season and another
shining example of his incredible ability to not only survive the most hectic of
races but carve a path through which is further underlined by his amazing 10 top
six finishes from his previous 12 Supreme Championship appearances. Expect that
tally to grow in 2016. Click here for
our interview with Dave
The first driver on our preview making his Supreme Championship debut in 2016 is
teenage star 25 Joe Parsons who at time is writing is still not legally
allowed to drive, arranging his interview for RDC Promotions.com around a
driving lesson. However on track, he has a wealth of experience and was a
leading star in the Ministox for some time which included plenty of shale
success at Coventry before switching to the Junior Bangers where he again
enjoyed much success and combined these two elements when he won the Micro
Banger Brandonapolis at Coventry a year ago. However it was his victory at the
King of the Peak that punched his ticket to this grid and while that race wasn’t
the best attended there were some leading drivers in it and his victory was a
clear display of his speed. Speed will not produce results in this race alone
but will be a key factor but his willingness to get stuck in, as he showed with
an entertainer award in the epic consolation at the 2015 Unlimited Suffolk Open
shows he’s happy to get his hands dirty if needed.
Click here for our interview with Joe
Continuing the theme of drivers making their debut appearance in the
championship is local racer Telbert 27 Terry King who will make his
second ‘first time appearance’ in a big race in the last year having made his
British Championship debut last summer and his hard fought podium finish in that
cracking contest if what secured him a place here. His determination to cross
the finish line in such an action packed affair in July bodes well for him here
but of course the main difference if that this will be in unlimited machinery
rather that National Bangers. While no stranger to unlimited and RWD cars,
Telbert has produced several head turning Granadas over the years, his form in
this format is a bit less proven than in Mondeo based meetings. Plenty of track
and shale experience will certainly make a big difference for him and he will be
looking to put all of it to good effect here as he first looks to finish which
he is likely to consider an achievement but if he does a top 10 finish is well
within his grasp.
It’s quite the story for former Spedeworth and Autospeed World Champion Magic
33 Gary Magewick who will make his third appearance in the championship but
this will be his first since 2002 breaking the previous record between
appearances held by 162 Brett Ellacott of 2000 and 2011. Like Ellacott and the
aforementioned Vincent, Magic was a part of the first Supreme Championship at
Hednesford in 2000 but it was two years later when he made a bigger impression,
just missing out on the line in a photo finish with 120 Shane Brown and having
to settle for second. Despite being a Spedeworth regular in 2016 it is somewhat
remarkable that given how short a distance it is for him from home to Mildenhall
that this will be first appearance in the race at West Row and his first on
track appearance at Mildenhall in many years. But it’s hard to believe the track
experience from a previous era isn’t waiting to be unlocked when the green flag
falls and providing he can find the key he should be a player in the race in
some shape.
Click here for our interview with Magic
Another driver with a massive break between Supreme Championship appearance is
long serving star Lips 45 Anthony Crowshaw who makes his third appearance
in the race and his first since 2008 after debuting in 2006, a race which ended
in controversy as managed to dodge a nasty looking hit from rival at the time
190 Steve Bailey with 191 Shaun McMillan unfortunately caught in the crossfire.
Earned his well overdue return appearance in the race with a fine fifth in the
very competitive Autospeed World Final at Taunton and will likely be more at
home with the race now under an unlimited format as this will be his first time
in the race with big cars on the track. While he is rarely seen on shale these
days, he has plenty of experience on this kind of surface from cutting his teeth
at the Paices Hill dirt track and one of many who honed his craft at Standlake,
a track known for its trickiness so he should be more than capable here. The
opening laps will likely be critical to his end game.
The amount of drivers set to make their debut
in the championship this year is quite remarkable and one of the more exciting
prospects, especially for those who enjoy their big hitting action, is Shakey
Jnr 60 Kyle Stevenson, whose typically crashy based nature in the sport
perhaps would not make him the most obvious driver to qualify for the race but
he earned his place with an excellent fourth place finish in the very lively TSR
World Final at King’s Lynn last summer, a result made all the more impressive
that he qualified for the race earlier in the night and did so by bagging an
entertaining award in the last chance race as well as finishing fifth to firmly
establish he can do it all when he puts his mind to it. His most recent visit to
Mildenhall however showed must more of his crashing side with an excellent
display in a Crown which included a fearless blitz on the Lincoln limo of 288
Carl Sowter. While a top 10 could be on the cards, the smart money would suggest
otherwise and he is a leading contender for the entertainer trophy.
Click here for our interview with Shakey
Jnr
It is a welcome return to the starting grid for Scratchy 74 Adam Hitchcock
who made his debut in 2014 and qualifies this year as the Autospeed seeded entry
having finished fourth in their season long points race and subsequently first
in line for the Supreme Championship spot. One of the sport most underrated
performers Adam has been rapidly forging a reputation for himself through a
combination of excellent dedication to the sport as well as many lively
performances which have been even more eye catching. It will be interesting to
see his intentions here as a lack of track and shale experience will not see him
start the evening as a leading contender on paper at least. Could that inspire a
caution to the win approach and another lively showing to help him earn a few
more fans away from home or might be under the radar of many give him the
opportunity to quietly go abut his business and maybe launch an attack on a
maiden top 10 finish? Again the opening laps are likely to have a big effect on
his intentions.
The next driver to make his Supreme Championship debut is one of the sport’s
leading stars at present as Panda 89 Joe Barratt ticks another item off
his bucket list with another high profile outing, something he’s been enjoying
more and more in recent times. Earning a reputation as one of the sport’s
biggest hitters, he proved in 2015 that he is far from a one trick pony as he
honed his racing skills, a fact more than proved with his third place finish in
the Shamwreck final at Tullyroan which earned his spot here. Made the headlines
again earlier this year winning the highly destructive final at the BWS round at
Wimbledon to secure his return trip to the Spedeworth World Final but perhaps
more impressively, the win came as the last car running in a 50 car race.
Survival skills such as that could be absolutely crucial in this race which has,
since becoming an unlimited affair, typically been a hectic one with few
finishers. Certainly not one to overlook for the podium and less so for the
entertainer trophy.

with Panda
There is a trend this year of drivers returning to the Supreme Championship grid
for the first time in a long time and the latest is the Cheat 99 Richie Ahern
who makes his third appearance in the race, his first since 2006 after his debut
in 2005 and he is still looking for a maiden top 10. One of many who will be
delighted that the event is now an unlimited affair which in 2016 plays much
more to his strengths that the format of a decade ago would have done. It is
perhaps surprising that it’s been so long since the former PRI World Champion
has been in the race but as he doesn’t tend to race in the same place too much
these days it has limited his championship appearances in general but there is
no denying his potential here a fact which is all the more proven as a former
Unlimited Suffolk Open Champion. His Achilles heel could be how hectic the race
is as while his speed cannot be denied he has often not had the luck in
surviving blood baths so the first few laps will be key, if he makes it through
them he’ll be a leading contender.
Yet another driver to make his championship debut, something which perhaps
underlines just how hard it is to qualify for this race, is another of the
sport’s fine young guns in 2016 with 122 Mark Cooper Jnr who earned his
place with an excellent second place finish in the Spedeworth World Final in
October, also his debut in the event. Given that he fared so well in his debut
appearance in that race it would be very foolish to bet against him repeating it
here, especially given how many drivers have finished second in the Supreme in
their rookie year. Has certainly boosted his chances with some more shale
appearances in recent times, making his Mildenhall debut last summer in the
British Championship where he was most entertaining although a visit to King’s
Lynn for the Unlimited Icebreaker in January will perhaps be more helpful and
his being on the pace was a good indicator for this one. Will be looking to find
his feet early on and yet another who will be a danger should he make it safely
through the opening laps.
Click here for our interview with Mark
Back for his second consecutive start in the championship is reigning Autospeed
Points Champion Terz 133 Terry Hill who made a fantastic debut in the
race last summer, finishing third in a hard fought and very action packed title
race, a feat made all the more impressive in that it was also his first time
racing at Mildenhall. 2015 was a successful year for the underrated racer with
more years of service to the sport than many give him credit for. In addition to
winning the silver roof, last season also saw him capture the 1800cc Boneshaker
title at Taunton and the Unlimited Crasharama at Taunton and while the latter
event may not still be at its peak from a decade ago there is no denying it
still isn’t a tough one to win. Turned plenty of heads last September when he
returned to Mildenhall for the RDC RWD Championship with his superb crashing
performance in the Allcomers which was one of the performances of the year at
RDC in 2016. Which side of Terz will we see this time? Either way expect him to
make a mark.
Not only another driver to make his Supreme Championship debut in 2016 but also
we think making the first appearance of the Wild Boyz in this prestigious event
is leading entertainer of the sport in recent years 149 Wayne Bailey, a
fact he hammered home at the 1500cc Icebreaker at King’s Lynn in February where
his hat trick of entertainer awards helped his team win the entertaining team
silverware. In all honesty, that kind of accolade might be his most realistic
option here as we suspect even he will agree that his chances of race victory
are not the highest, unless of course the race goes last car running, which
cannot be ruled out given how few finishers there has been in recent years.
There is no denying that winning the entertainer award in such good company
would be a big deal for Wayne but either way the smart money would suggest a
lively performance from the livewire who earned his spot with a fifth in the
destructive UK Open at Skegness in August and his presence in the race will be
welcomed by many.

It will be a landmark outing for leading RDC star Victor 188 John Reeves
as this will be his 10th consecutive start in the championship, most remarkable
feat which puts him in very elite company as one of just three drivers to
achieve this. Made his debut in 2007 when he finished sixth and then won the
title, his biggest championship race win by some margin two years later but
results since then have been very sporadic with only a seventh in the snow
struck race in 2013 to his CV. Likely among those who would have preferred the
event to still be a National Banger event for his own chances at least but as a
former RDC RWD points champion he is more than capable in this format, it’s just
he rarely seems to have the luck in unlimited meetings at Mildenhall but some
top 10 finishes in last year’s Granada meeting could be a good omen. This will
be his first start in several years without a silver roof as a former RDC, Dover
and RDC RWD points champion so the desire for a title roof could be higher than
ever.

It may surprise you to
learn that this will be the first appearance of former World Champion Pikey
190 Steve Bailey in the Supreme Championship since 2011 and subsequently his
first time in the race since it’s recent switch to an unlimited format. He has
qualified in the meantime but various reasons have kept him away but with much
enthusiasm shown for this one he is a welcome returnee to the grid where his
presence is likely to be felt. Debuted in 2005 and this will be his seventh time
in the race, his best, and in fact only, result to date coming in his last
appearance with a fine third. Certainly has the talent to improve on that here
but this year’s race comes at a time where he and his DWO stablemates have many
enemies in the sport and while there might not be as many present in this race
as their could have been there will be several for him to keep his eye on. But
in a grid as big as this there is no guarantee they will cross paths and the
actions of this rivals could have a greater shape on his race than his own
intentions.
One of the biggest positives to the 2015 season at RDC was the addition of the
King family to the ranks and it’s pleasing to see that is a continued thing in
2016, maybe especially so in the case of Charlie Boy 204 Charlie King who
had a cracking debut year as an RDC driver but it perhaps wasn’t as strong as it
might have been due to health issues keeping him off track more than he would
have liked. With his sights set on a big year in 2016 he could be poised to
finally have the breakout season he so richly deserves and he has all the tools
to do well in this one. This will be his fourth appearance in race having
debuted in 2011 but he is yet to register a top 10 finish and in all truth he
will probably not settle just a top 10 here such is the burning desire for a
long overdue maiden major title which has been relit. Qualified for this year’s
race with a fine fourth place in the Autospeed World Final. One of many perhaps
looking for a tough race as he tends to thrive in blood baths and providing his
makes the finish he’ll be near the front.

2015 was without doubt a breakout season for young gun Tombo 209 Tom Waller
who more than lived up to the potential he had previously displayed winning both
the Shamwreck and Terminator finals at Tullyroan and Belle Vue, the former
result earning his place here and he will now be looking for a maiden major,
roof grade carrying, title and he is more than capable of winning that here.
Returned to the grid last year after triumphing in his last chance qualifier
having made his debut in the 2013 event which was destroyed by snow but despite
the conditions he picked up a top 10 finish and he will be eager to build on
that this year. Having qualified on the night last year, he duly drew pole on
the grid and managed to lead a few laps and had he gone the distance he likely
would have been a top finisher. With added experience and confidence from his
successful 2015 season he starts this year as a front runner. Another where the
difference will be whether he goes the distance or not, if he does expect a top
finish.
It’s increasingly remarkable and outstanding to talk about the commitment former
Crimond points champion 222 Colin Riddell has shown to this event since
it first switched to an unlimited format as this will be the fifth time in as
many years that he has made the marathon trip from the very tip of the country
to visit the Suffolk shaleway. And the visits have started to produce results,
taking fourth in the epic 2014 race and seventh last season and while admittedly
there weren’t many more finishers in either year, just finishing the race is an
achievement it itself, underlined by the fact that only three drivers have
managed it in both 2014 and 2015. Earned his latest appearance in the
championship with a fine fifth in the World Cup at Cowdenbeath, a notoriously
tough race to finish and a result which shows his pace on one of the sports
fastest tracks. Likely to again benefit from a heavy race with plenty of action
where his survival skills will be especially useful and should he go the
distance, expect another top 10 result at least.
Continuing the Crimond theme and we come to the northern venue’s seeded entry
for 2016 which is their unlimited track champion 230 Scott Patterson. The
support of the Crimond drivers for this event over the last five years has been
nothing short of amazing, especially when you consider they spend the best part
of an entire day on the road to get two and from the meeting. Scott is a great
example of that support as this will be his third consecutive visit to the
meeting, made all the more impressive that he wasn’t put of by coming as a
spectator in 2013 when the snow came and that his first visit to race in 2014
was simply with a support booking. The following year he debuted in the last
chance race and now he steps up to the main event and he will be looking to make
it count. Proudly claimed in his interview on RDC Promotions.com that on both
his previous visits his car had survived for another meeting and those survival
skills will be key here and he’ll certainly be looking to at least go the full
distance.
Click here for our interview with Scott
Despite failing to win any major titles, 2015 was still an incredible year for the hugely
popular Bro 247 Lee Clarke who will make history this year with his 10th
consecutive appearance in the race, one of just three people to do that
(assuming 188 Victor also makes the start). Although assured a place on the grid
as an ever present ex champion having won the title in 2011 he enjoyed some
strong results last season with fifth in the Supreme, his third top six finish
in the race having finished sixth in 2013) and second in the TSR World, the
latter being a race he looked set to win as he did in the PRI and Autospeed
Worlds as well, leading the former to the last bend and entering one of the
performances of 2015 at Taunton before the numbers finally caught up with him
and he was stopped by his rivals. Faces similar surrounding here with several
drivers he has a history with but it hasn’t stopped him before but regardless of
the outcome it’s almost guaranteed he’ll be well involved.
Now back to competing full time on National Bangers is Water Boy 257 Timmy
Aldridge although his main success at Mildenhall came from his brief time in
Saloon Stockcars. Victory in the Unlimited Spring Open at Ringwood which
certainly highlighted his excellent pace on tarmac and he remained near the top
of the points chart throughout the year at his home promotion of Incarace which
led to an appearance in the British Championship last summer while he also
visited for a lively Inter Counties team race showing in August. In fact his
Incarace points position in 2015 secured his place in this year’s championship,
his first in the event and he will be looking to make the most of it. While not
the most regular shale racer in the sport he is no stranger to the surface and
will certainly be comfortable on it but one of those who might benefit from
things being a bit racier as he never seems to have the luck in the livelier
races, another more the capable of a strong result providing he is still there
at the end.
Another driver making his Supreme Championship debut is 261 Dom Davies
and he promises to be another fine addition to the grid. He takes his place as
the seeded entry from Stratrax having finished second in the points championship
there in 2015 which also punched his ticket to his first Spedeworth World Final
in October so he is rapidly becoming all the more present at these big
occasions. His lofty position in the Stratrax points chart last year also
highlights his potential to impress here as not only are all their circuits
shale ones but Stoke and Belle Vue, where the bulk of their National Banger
action is held, have many similar characters to Mildenhall and his second place
in the Terminator at the Manchester venue more than confirms his ability in
unlimited machinery on the smaller shale tracks. He is another whose success
could be established in the opening laps of the race and this is likely to be as
manic a start of a race as he has ever been in and a real test for the young gun
which if he can survive will set him on the path for the top 10 at least.
Click here for our interview with Dom
Yet another driver making
his Supreme Championship debut in 2016 is Masters Champion Steely 267 James
Steel who earned his spot in the big race with his victory in the Masters
Championship at Dover last September where he bested team mate 271 Dean Goodearl
in the closing stages in difficult conditions. Recent times have seen Steely
make more frequent appearances in unlimited machinery and he is certainly a very
fast racer and being no stranger to the Mildenhall shale he has all the tools
needed to make his debut a successful one. The only chink in his amour could be
his ability to survive if the race is as hectic as many expect it to be as for
whatever reason, he rarely seems to have the luck in the blood baths. Likely to
be among the drivers who hopes the race remains a settled one which would play
to his strengths, namely his speed and one who may not relish the sight of a
track blockage. However should he go the distance it would be a surprise to not
see him in the top 10.
Reigning and two time Mildenhall Track Champion 313 Craig Osborne makes
his third consecutive appearance in the championship and continues to look for a
maiden top 10 which is surely on the cards if he can go the distance this time
which has been his undoing on previous visits. 2015 proved to be an incredible
season for the Mildenhall local, not only retaining his prize track championship
but also winning a superb British Championship race as well as the Hot Shots
title which was also a hugely action packed race with precious few finishers.
These big wins will likely only add to his thirst to finally get a significant
result in this race and establish his form in RWD and unlimited machinery which
he admits to be his most enjoyable format these days. Was a front runner in his
debut in 2014 until he was side lined, along with the majority of the field, he
more than has the survival and racing skills to make an impact in this one, he
just needs a little of the luck which helped him take the British and Hot Shot
crowns last year.

Craig
Despite failing to retain the Supreme Championship last year, 328 Dan Lathan
did achieve something quite impressive as with a fine fourth place finish, all
the more impressive as he had to rally back from being taken out early in the
race, he is one of just three drivers to register a finish in the race in the
last two years which underlines just how hard this event has been to complete in
recent years. The former TSR World Champion had to settle for second in the
Mildenhall track championship for the second year running in 2015 but he did
claim the RWD points title for the second time meaning his cars will again bear
a coveted silver roof for this season, something we suspect will be of great
importance to him as the loss of a championship roof grade after last year’s
Supreme was a hammer blow to him. Has started 2016 in almost perfect fashion by
claiming the Mildenhall Winter Series for the second time to quickly establish
himself as a leading contender for this years points title and it would be a
brave man to bet against him here as well.
One of the later additions to the grid is
Wingnut 338 Terry Garrod who takes the place of the TSR seeded entry for the
second year running, stepping in for his brother Ashley who was set to have the
spot but had to withdraw at the start of the month. Terry’s eagerness to take
the place shows his enthusiasm for the event and perhaps his determination to
make up for last year’s disappointing debut where he failed to finish. Will be
interesting to see what the intention of the reigning and three time 1500cc
National and former two time TSR points champion as are with increased unlimited
appearances at King’s Lynn in the last couple of years he is a very solid bet
for the top 10 but we’ve seen him enjoying action at the wheel of Previas
recently and with a couple of drivers he has history with, he could very easily
be more intent on spoiling the hopes of others. The car he brings to the meeting
is likely to give a lot away about his plans but either way he should be
involved.
Making a welcome to the championship grid this year is former PRI Points
Champion the Bull 347 Dave Bull who debuted in the snow in 2013 and
successful returned in 2014 but failed to make it three in a row last year.
Secured his place with a fine second in the PRI World Final in September and it
could have very easily been the top spot had things gone slightly different in
the memorable last bend of the race. Has yet to register a top 10 finish in the
Supreme Championship and that is something he will be looking to put right this
year and coming at a time when the Midnight Runners don’t appear to have the
volume of regular enemies as they once did and perhaps precious few on this
particular grid this could be a golden opportunity for him to do just that.
Despite not being the most frequent visitor to Mildenhall he usually goes well
when he does visit the Mildenhall shale but recent unlimited outings have seen
more of his crashing side on show so could that be what we might expect here?
The first of three Gladiators to qualify for the race is livewire Noddy 349
Lewis Price who by his own admission in his RDC Promotions.com interview,
isn’t going to win this race, his plans of piloting a Toyota Previa in the big
race will no doubt be welcomed by many action fans as should he get the chance
you can only expect mayhem to be on his mind. This will be his second appearance
in the race having made his debut in the inaugural unlimited championship at
Mildenhall in 2012 and he earned his spot on this year’s grid when he finished
sixth in the TSR World Final at King’s Lynn. With two of his team mates out
there, who are in all honesty, much more fancied title contenders, he’ll
certainly have an eye on them but the truth is if Noddy is in a playful mood, is
anyone really safe especially as no-one has forgotten him stopping 516 Carl
Gould while he was on course to win the Spedeworth World Final in 2014, another
leading contender for the entertainer trophy at the end of the race.
Click here for our interview with Noddy
Having made a perhaps overdue debut in the championship last year 433 Ben
Smith makes his return to the grid in 2016 where he once again will have his
eyes firmly glued on a much overdue first major title in the sport. Arguably one
of the sport’s more underrated stars, while he is certainly an established star
it’s arguable that he still doesn’t quite get the recognition he deserves and
it’s often overlooked how many years he has been competing in the sport but a
big win here would certainly sort all of that. Had victory in the Spedeworth
World Final within his finger tips only for it to slip away which has led to a
simmering feud with 122 Mark Cooper escalate and with both expected here it
remains to be seen if the friction between them continues. While he is more of a
tarmac racer he rarely struggles on shale as he proved last year with a strong
showing until he was taken out while his crashing performance in a Rover P5 at
the 2014 stands out so expect him to be well involved one way or another.
Another driver who enjoys a real history with
the Supreme Championship is 2008 champion Sutty 439 Danny Sutton who
makes his ninth consecutive appearance in the race this year which will make him
fourth on the all time highest list and he remains the last driver to win the
event on his debut and arguably the only driver to do this as the only other
driver with that accolade is Speedy Reed but of course everyone was making their
debut in 2000. Cutting back on his racing commitments seems to have worked
wonders for the former London Open Champion as picking and choosing the meetings
he enjoys has maintained him as a regular sight in the spot and his epic
Oldsmobile Cutlass coupe at the Unlimited Icebreaker was one of the star cars of
the year so far. We would imagine something a little more competitive here as he
looks for an elusive first top 10 in the race since it’s switch to unlimited
something he is more than capable of and another indication of just how tough
this race has been recently.
Another driver making his return to the Supreme Championship grid after a
noticeable absence is the second of the Gladiators in this year’s race with
542 Craig Oliver who was last seen in the event when he made his debut in
2010 when he finished a decent ninth meaning this will be his first time in the
race as an unlimited event. Not that it will phase him greatly as he is one of
the Gladiators who is equally skilled in the larger machines than the smaller
stuff although his path to this year’s race came via an excellent second in the
2litre World Final at Hednesford. However while he is no stranger to racing
unlimited machines, his form in them on shale is a little less proven so it will
be interesting to see how he fares here. With the prospect of some Gladiator
enemies on the grid there is no doubting they will be very much in his firing
line but with such enemies not set to be in the greatest of numbers an assault
on the podium should not be ruled out.
Completing the trio of Gladiators set for action in this year’s championship is
former Mildenhall Winter Series Champion and reigning CAMSO World Cup holder
549 Phil Smith who was arguably the brightest star in the sport during the
winter of 2014-5 and could have easily been among the discussions for driver of
the year in 2015 had we seen more of him but it would appear that with the team
having less of a common enemy we also saw less of the team and arguably less of
their best. Despite this Smith could easily be one to watch here as he makes his
fifth appearance in the race in the last seven years following his 2011 debut.
Was last seen in 2014 where he stopped arch rival 348 Sonny Sherwood and you
would imagine similar things will be on his mind if such rivals are present here
but if given the chance he should not be discounted from the title picture,
winning races at this meeting the last two years and they were both blood baths,
if this goes the same way his odds of victory increase big time.
2015 will forever be an amazing season for second generation racer Dino Jnr
570 Jordan Cumming who won both the RDC Drivers and Dover Track Championship
to earn himself a coveted silver roof for 2016. He also enjoyed some great
success in major championships in the sport, a second in the English at Mendips
earning him his debut appearance in the Supreme Championship and he followed
that with a seventh in the British, third in the TSR World and third in the
Masters which made for a very impressive run of from last season and he will be
eager to build on that here. While all those results came in FWD machinery his
unlimited form is ever improving and he is another that tends to thrive in the
more lively racers which really play to his strengths as while he is always
quick, he is ultimately a banger driver. It’s been eight years since a driver
has won the championship on their debut and if that is to be repeated again this
year Dino Jnr has to be one of the favourites to do it.
There isn’t much than be said about 617 Jack
Overy which hasn’t been said before especially since he finally captured the
Spedeworth World Championship in October to make it 10 World titles on his CV.
However one thing that can be said is the Supreme Championship is one title he
is yet to win, in fact despite winning the RDC and Mildenhall points titles in
the past, major championship wins at his most local track are very few and far
between, the RDC RWD Championship being an exception to the rule. It might also
surprise you to learn this will be his first appearance in the race since it’s
switch to unlimited at Mildenhall, his last appearance being in 2010 and that
was his first appearance since 2005 after he raced in five of the first Supreme
Championships including the maiden one at Hednesford but an eighth in 2005
remains his best result to date. Assuming he brings his racing head, rather than
the crashing one we’ve seen more recently at Mildenhall, he’ll look to put that
right here.
Rapidly becoming part of the furniture in the Supreme Championship, TSR World
and Points Champion 673 Darren Fendley will make his fourth appearance in
the race in the last five years, making his debut in 2011 the last year before
the event became an unlimited one and he registered an excellent fourth place
which remains his only top 10 finish in the race having yet to go the distance
since the race went unlimited. That kind of sums up Darren’s form in big car
races at Mildenhall which does tend to be bit all or nothing. He is very, very
capable of being a front runner again this year but in order to do that he will
need to, rather obviously, go the distance and should he manage that it will be
surprising if he is not on the podium, let alone the top 10. Joined a very elite
club in 2015 by winning the King’s Lynn points alongside his previously held
Mildenhall track title (22 Dave Vincent the only driver in recent times to do
that) and this included a lot more unlimited outings at the Norfolk Arena which
is bound to help his chances here.
Another drivers making a welcome and overdue return to the championship grid in
2016 is long serving racer No Show 714 Paul Smaldon who makes his second
appearance in the race and his first since 2009 making this his first time in
the big race under an unlimited format which is likely to boost his chances as
in 2016 this appears to be his preferred format, a far he proved when he won the
Blockbuster final at St Day in August. However he secured his place here in a
2litre race with a fine fourth place finish in the English Championship at
Mendips to highlight he can perform in almost any car and any format. Now
enjoying his racing away from the team commitments he enjoyed for so many years
as part of the Posh Wash, Midnight Runners and DWO and the lack of those team
feuds probably won’t do his chances any harm here and allow him to get on with
his own business which is likely to start with a concentrated effort on at least
finishing but should plans change he could easily spell misery for others.
Click here for our interview with No Show
Making his third consecutive appearance in the championship is former PRI and
Buxton points champion 717 Jack Tuffen who is without question one of the
fastest racers in the sport at present, especially on tarmac, a craft the second
generation racer certainly picked up during his years in Stock Rods and 1300cc
Stockcars. Still looking for a maiden National Banger championship race win, he
secured his spot in this year’s Supreme with a second place finish in the King
of the Peak, a race which while lacking in numbers, wasn’t lacking in fast
drivers. However speed will not win this race alone and that fact is perhaps
underlined by Jack being yet to register a top 10 finish in the race so his
first goal this year will surely be to finish and if previous years are anything
to go by that will likely mean a maiden top 10. Has shown his talent on previous
unlimited appearances to Mildenhall and the shale holds no obstacle but with
another year of experience in big races he’ll be looking to make this count and
be there at the end.
The former RDC RWD Points Champion 898 Andy Battle is another driver in
the unlimited era of the Supreme Championship who is becoming a regular part of
the race as this will be his fifth consecutive appearance in the event, one of a
handful to have raced in every unlimited Supreme Championship so far at
Mildenhall (albeit qualifying via the last chance race in 2014 and 2013), and
his sixth in total having debuted in 2009. Was one of the few to go the distance
in the memorable 2012 race, finishing an excellent fourth which remains his best
finish in the race to date and he will be gunning for similar success here,
especially after losing his grip on his silver roof last year and he’d love
something special to replace that for the forthcoming year. Booked his spot as
the RDC seeded entry for the race to further highlight his potential here which
is only increased with his more frequent unlimited appearances these days,
another who will be a leading contender if he is still in the race at half way.
The final driver on our preview is another making his championship debut and he
is another very interesting addition to the grid in the shape of west country
live wire Babsy 988 Billy Dennison who grabbed a place on the grid with a
sixth place finish in the Autospeed World Final in September. While he has
largely remained in his own colours, his links to DWO have been arguably strong
over the years and there is likely to be a large west country presence in this
year’s race which could make for interesting viewing. He has made a couple of
visits to Mildenhall in recent times and has more than held his own although a
lack of shale and track experience could mean he doesn’t start as one of the
more obvious contenders for the title and it will be interesting to see how they
plays into him game plan. Will he look to prove a point and be gunning for the
top 10 or instead will he opt for other things and try and inject as much action
and carnage into the race as possible, something no doubt many fans would love
to see.

Last Chance Qualifier entry
As well as the BBA Supreme Championship becoming an unlimited event in 2012
the second big change was the introduction of a last chance qualifier which will
once again offer at least three final places in the championship event.
Previously the Supreme Championship was perhaps the only major National Banger event in the sport to not offer any last chance places for drivers to qualify on the night of the meeting.
However as the meeting develops comes the introduction of a last chance qualifier event. However just like the main event itself, this too is an invitational only affair and invited drivers will have the chance to qualify for the Supreme Championship on March 19 2016.
Invitations have been sent to drivers who have competed in any one of the BBA Championship races which determine qualifiers for the Supreme Championship, were eligible to be their promotions seeded entry by being one of the top 10 in their promotions 2015 points chart who failed to qualify for the big race, won a recognised unlimited championship or championship race at RDC or are a previous champion.
Over 250 drivers are eligible to compete in the last chance event and while we do not expect the majority to accept the invitation we are hopeful of sufficient to make the maiden last chance qualifier a competitive affair and should there be sufficient cars an additional race would be run.
Below is the full list of drivers who are
eligible for the last chance race. Drivers highlighted in bold have
confirmed their intention to race while those shown with a strikethrough
have confirmed they will not be attending. For a look at just those drivers who
have provisionally booked in go to the entry list near

There are still places available for drivers at this meeting as part of the support entry who will be introduced to the meeting after the Supreme Championship.
Support drivers are reminded that the format means all drivers will have the chance of three races on the night but support drivers will not be able to qualify for the championship itself. Their first race will be the consolation with qualifiers from this race advancing to the meeting final while non qualifiers will move to the Allcomers and all drivers will then be eligible for the Accumulator qualifier and DD.
Support bookings are limited and therefore drivers wishing to have one of these bookings are encouraged to request one as soon as possible.
Drivers wishing to book in can contact RDC by e mailing wastedmc@btopenworld.com. calling 01268 412299 (ideally between 9.30am and 12.30pm Monday to Friday) or with Michael Coventry direct. This list was last updated on March 14

BBA Supreme
Championship to go unlimited in 2012
While some of the information is now dated here is full announcement from
the RDC website on March 30 2011 explaining the motivations for making the
Supreme Championship an unlimited event in 2012.
As hinted on the RDC website last week we had some important announcements
to make last weekend at Mildenhall Stadium and the first was that in 2012
massive changes will be made to the annual BBA Supreme Championship which will
be run to an unlimited banger format for the first time at Mildenhall next
season.
While the switch to unlimited bangers in 2012 was announced at Mildenhall last
weekend, we didn’t announce the second big change which is that next year the
meeting will also have a last chance qualifier race introduced to the programme.
However, like the main event this will also be an invitational only affair and
is explained further after we detail our move to unlimited bangers in 2012.
This change to unlimited bangers is something we have been considering for many
weeks and months at RDC and while we admit it is something of a gamble, we
believe it is a necessary step for this prestigious event to continuing growing
in importance and popularity in the sport.
When the Supreme Championship was first conceived in the 1999 season (the maiden
event was run in 2000 at Hednesford) the intention was always for the meeting to
become one of, if not the most important race of the season in National Bangers.
This goal was certainly not achieved at first and after three somewhat
disappointing years where the event was held at Hednesford in 2000, Mildenhall
in 2001 and Northampton in 2002, the event came very close to being scrapped all
together from the fixtures.
The history of the event has been documented before but for those unfamiliar
with the story the Supreme was originally meant to be shared between RDC,
Northampton and Incarace (this was prior to Incarace running Northampton) as
these were the three original and main members of the BBA who did not run their
own World Final. When discussions were held about the future of the Supreme and
other BBA events in the closed season of 2002/3 Incarace opted to trade in both
the National Championship at Hednesford, the European Championship at
Northampton and their share of the Supreme Championship in return for the BBA
2Litre World Final which they now run at Hednesford.
As a result of this the Supreme Championship found a full time home at RDC and
Mildenhall Stadium and with that in mind RDC set about working to raise the
profile of the race and the whole event to the heights originally intended.
It didn’t happen overnight. The 2003 championship was no more popular than the
2001 event at Mildenhall but from then on the meeting grew and grew and grew and
last weekend’s Supreme Championship was the eighth event in a row to attract a
triple figure entry of cars. Furthermore recent Supreme Finals have seen in
excess of 40 of the sports finest do battle for the coveted championship, which
is now regarded by many as one of the most elite races of the season. Certainly
the 2008 championship is still regarded by many as the best banger championship
race ever seen at Mildenhall and one of the best in the sport in the last
decade.
Over the years many changes have been made in order to try and improve the
quality of the event. First we introduced a reserve system to boost the number
of cars on the grid. We introduced and tweaked the previous champion qualifying
allocation which ensured victory in the big race would result in a return
appearance for several years at least. The race was moved to the start of the
programme to give the seeded entries a greater opportunity to make the most of
their trip to Mildenhall and this year we tightened the qualifying system
further which while producing a smaller field of 32 cars resulted in an even
higher quality of qualifiers.
Now it is time for the biggest change of all.
Again when the Supreme Championship concept was first conceived the intention
was always to make the race one of the most important in the sport. We believe
the event has gone as far as it can go under the current format of National
Bangers and essentially FWD cars.
Our goal is now to try and take the Supreme Championship to the next level and
this means making the meeting an unlimited banger event. It goes without saying
that this is a massive gamble. The Supreme Championship is now a very much
established fixture and there is a saying that you shouldn’t try to fix
something which isn’t broken but we are trying to make it even better.
Many would argue that unlimited cc racing is, in the modern day, the pinnacle of
National Banger racing and that big races run to an unlimited format carry more
prestige and honour than those for National (FWD) style events. This is
underlined in the fact that over the years more and more of the big races which
help shape the starting grid for the Supreme Championship have been run to
unlimited rules, another influence in our decision.
It is our hope that by making the Supreme an unlimited affair will generate even
more importance to this race, the meeting and of course the winner.
But again it is a massive gamble. We do not expect this to be an over night
success. For us this is almost like going back to 2003 and starting all over
again from square one and trying to build the meeting up as we have done from
2003 to 2011. And of course there is a high chance that introducing another
unlimited fixture to the RDC calendar could have an impact on our existing big
car fixtures. But this is a risk we are willing to take and again we must stress
this is a long term project and it will take some time for us to achieve our
ultimate goal.
Switching the Supreme Championship to unlimited bangers in 2012 isn’t the only
big change being made to the meeting as for the first time ever the meeting will
feature a last chance qualifier. Over the years the Supreme has prided itself on
being the only major banger championship in the sport to not have a last chance
race but this will chance in 2012.
However the last chance race will carry some similarities to the main event
itself in that it will be an invitational only affair. While the meeting will
remain open to all drivers from all promotions (in 2012 at least) the last
chance race will only be open to drivers who may have qualified for the
championship.
The 2011 Supreme Championship was the first of 13 races this year which will
shape the 2012 event. The following races all count towards next year’s
championship
Supreme Championship at Mildenhall on March 26
World Cup at Cowdenbeath on April 9
2Litre World Final at Hednesford on May 15
English Championship at Mendips on June 26
King of the Peak at Buxton on July 10
TSR World Final at King’s Lynn on July 16
UK Open at Skegness on August
British Championship at Mildenhall on August 14
European Championship at Warneton on September 4
World Final at Taunton on September 11
PRI World Final at Arena Essex on September 18
Masters Championship at Dover on September 26
World Final at Ipswich on October 15
The first three finishers in each event which have not already qualified will be
seeded directly to the Supreme Championship but in 2012 any driver who competes
in any of the races above but does not qualify will be eligible to compete in
the last chance race.
Joining the qualifiers in 2012 will once again be one seeded entry from every
ORC promotion. This should be the highest finisher in their 2011 points
championship who has failed to qualify in their own right but in accordance to
the tightened qualifying rules in 2011 this driver MUST have finished at least
sixth in the points to be eligible (unless all of the top six have qualified in
which the place will be offered to the highest non qualifier). Any additional
top six drivers who do not qualify will be invited to the last chance race.
Finally the three most recent Supreme Champions who fail to qualify in their own
right for the 2012 event will also be added to the grid. Any further former
champions may contest the last chance race as well.
The top three drivers (at least) in the last chance race will be seeded into the
main event.
While on one hand it is a shame that the Supreme will no longer be the only
championship in the sport to not have a last chance event the introduction of
this last chance qualifier under these stipulations we believe will be crucial
to the continued success of the meeting and very important in our long term
goals for the meeting.
However again we want to stress that next year’s Supreme Championship meeting
will be open to all drivers but only invited drivers will be able to compete in
the last chance race.
This is the dawn of a new era for the Supreme Championship. We have more ideas
bubbling away at the moment which we intend to share in the coming weeks and
months but in the meantime we would like to thank all the drivers and fans who
over the last decade have helped make this meeting what it is and we hope you
will support our plans to make the event even bigger in the future.
No Minors...No Exceptions
This is Where the Big Boys Play
The Fastest Show on Shale
Joining the Unlimited Bangers once again for
their BBA Supreme Championship meeting are the high octane BriSCA F2 Stockcars
who return to the raceway for the first time since late September to do battle
in the opening round of their 2016 track championship and a season which will
see Mildenhall Stadium and RDC Promotions host the coveted World Championship
for only the second time in history.
What make’s this year’s road to gold all the more intriguing is that for the
first time in history the critical semi-final leg of the series will also be
held on shale at King’s Lynn making for a mouth watering prospect for the
sport’s shale aces, many of whom will see this season as possibly their best
ever chance to win the sport’s biggest prize while there are many others that
will see 2016 as their best possible chance to simply compete in the biggest
race of the year.
There is no escaping the fact that last season was a slightly disappointing one
for the formula when compared to previous years at Mildenhall and across the
shale scene and that disappointment related to the car entries which were
noticeably down on previous years although it should be stressed that rarely was
the standard of racing effected and this remained as excellent as always.
There were several theories as to why the average car entries dipped in 2015 and
among them was that some were taking some time away or taking the 2015 season a
little easier than normal in order to prepare for an all out assault on the 2016
season with the World Championship very much in mind.
And it seems there could be some weight to this argument because the first
weekend of the season was hugely encouraging, admittedly with the extra
significance of the weekend’s fixtures at King’s Lynn and Belle Vue being the
first World Qualifiers of the year, both meetings were fully booked with several
left disappointed to make for a much stronger start to the year that previous
years.
It makes the early interest in this fixture all the more encouraging as over 30
drivers quickly booked in as soon as bookings were opened at the start of March
and it’s increasingly hopeful we may have an improved entry on this years
fixture from 12 months ago meaning that a full format featuring a qualifiers
only Grand Final could be on the cards, a fact made all the more impressive that
this date comes at a very busy time on the shale scene and is sandwiched between
World of Shale qualifiers at Coventry and Stoke plus a further shale fixture at
Belle Vue on Easter Monday but the levels of interest and support already shown
to this and other early season shale fixtures is massive encouraging to the
season ahead.
While the BriSCA F2 Stockcars may not share the levels of contact and action
that we see in our other national level stockcar formula at Mildenhall, the
Saloon Stockcars, the BriSCA F2s bring a very different and unique style of
stockcar racing to the Suffolk shaleway. The opened wheeled stockcars are the
fastest of the formulas which we see at Mildenhall with lap times that rival
those of the National League Speedway riders that compete here, a feat made all
the more impressive that their lap times are achieved in fields with far more
than three other rivals on the track at a time, and the skill levels shown by
these racers are second to none, certainly the Grand Finals here, typically
featuring the evening’s biggest grid and best drivers are often some of the best
races sees here and there is a good chance it will be no different here.
The 2015 season at Mildenhall ended in fine fashion with the formula with one of
the better meetings of last year which kicked off with the annual White and
Yellow Grade Series Final which doubled up as heat one and was won by 260
Anthony Winters ahead of 380 Steve Cayzer and 597 Barry Clow before the
remainder of the field contested heat two and 225 Tony Blackburn emerged for the
spoils with 376 Darren Seneschall taking the consolation.
Once again the final, a qualifiers only affair which was something of a rarity
in 2015, was an absolute stormer with 449 Mark Dorrill holding off the closing
136 Kyle Taylor to claim his first ever Grand Final victory in the formula with
Blackburn in third and the latter went on to win the 30 car Grand National which
was a fitting end to the season.
While the meeting wasn't his best work of the season, a sixth in the Grand
National secured veteran racer 380 Steve Cayzer his elusive first track
championship title, a crown he most certainly deserved having had to settle for
second the previous two years. At time of writing he was yet to confirm his
presence here and his absence was also noted the first weekend of the season but
given he also missed the first round of the championship in 2015, should be also
not be here for this one it is unlikely to rule him out of championship
contention at the end of the year.
It was a close fought thing in 2015, Cayzer’s disappointing final round meaning
those points in the last race of the year were absolutely critical as without
them World of Shale Champion 871 Mark Simpson would have won the title by a
single point rather than finishing just four points adrift. The former World
Champion is one of many to be very focussed for this season as he looked to
regain the golden roof and perhaps put to bed any lingering demons from his
painfully close second place finish in the last World Final race held at
Mildenhall.
Those two race wins at the final meeting here in 2015 helped Blackburn finish
the season third in the track championship with 823 Sam Wagner completing the
major places while the top 10 was wrapped up by 124 Ollie Skeels, defending
champion 103 Carl Issit, former World of Shale Champion 905 Rob Mitchell, 289
James Waterfall, 597 Barry Clow and 81 Mark Clayton completing the top 10 and we
are pleased to report that almost all of last years top 10 at Mildenhall were
among the first drivers to book in for this meeting where they will certainly be
among the leading contenders both here and throughout the year.
As already mentioned despite the drop in car numbers at some meetings, it was
still a hugely competitive season with over 20 different race winners at
Mildenhall in 2015 and not for the first time no driver managed to win more than
one Grand Final at the Suffolk shaleway last year.
This competitive edge was also clear to see during the first weekend of the
season for the formula with eight different winners from the 10 races held
between King’s Lynn and Belle Vue on March 5 and 6 where only 606 Andy Palmer
and 298 Jake Walker were able to take the chequered flag twice, both claiming a
race win at each meeting and they would love to continue that excellent start to
the season here, especially Walker who claimed the Grand Final at Belle Vue.
In fact it’s not just these two who were among the first to book in for this
meeting but so to have the majority of first weekend shale winners with all bar
King’s Lynn Final winner 218 Rob Speak and 887 Neil Brigg among the early entries for this one.
Among those first weekend race winners who were quick to confirm their intention
to race here were 5 Josh Coleman and 715 Scott Aldridge who were qualifying race
winners at King’s Lynn and 377 Daz Shaw and Wagner who were among the race
winners at Belle Vue and will be looking to follow that up with more success
here.
Others to feature strongly on March 5 and 6 were Issit who followed up a second
in his heat with a third in the final at King’s Lynn where 788 Stephen Mallinson
and Simpson completed the top three in the Grand National, the latter then
finishing second in heat at Belle Vue where Mallinson was third in his and
former World of Shale Champion 977 Dave Massey was second in both his heat and
final and 226 Billy Webster was in the top five in both finals that weekend and
with all these drivers expected here we are set for a quality start to the
season.
Bookings are now open for this meeting but with the intention to run no more than five BriSCA F2 Stockcar races at the meeting, places are limited. Drivers can book in by e mailing wastedmc@btopenworld.com, calling 01268 412299 (ideally between 9.30am and 12.30pm Monday to Friday) or with Michael Coventry direct.
